I know we should be probably looking to replace him soon but I'll honestly be heartbroken when this guy leaves.

Probably the only player I'll consistently want to play no matter how bad they are or how done in he is.

    What a hero.

Been consistent for the last 3 years or so, and could last another 3 years if he stays injury free.
He seems to have lost a little bit of his stamina but his experience and positional awareness gets him by.
A model pro and he loves the club so like Izzy I'm happy to have him here even though he's getting on.

Aye, I'll be gutted if/when he goes. Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends his career here.

I think Gamoa was bought to replace him as he has more pace, energy and stamina but lustigs experience, positional awareness and reading of the game make him the first choice right back!

Hope this guy signs a new deal soon, one of those players you just love to see in the team.

Mikael Lustig is confident that he will commit his future to Celtic as he prepares to prolong his stay in Glasgow.

The Swedish defender is out of contract at the end of this season after five years with the Parkhead side, and would be eligible to talk to other clubs in January. Brendan Rodgers has already intimated that he sees the 29-year-old as a significant part of his squad and would like to retain his services.

However, Lustig has proven to be a key component in the Brendan Rodgers era at Celtic and he is keen to sign a new deal that would keep him in the Hoops.

“We will see,” he said. “I love to be play for this club. I have been here for five years and hopefully I can be here a little bit longer.

“My agent has spoken to the club, I think. I do love playing for Celtic. It is a great club and hopefully we can find a solution because I would like to stay here. It is football, sometimes it takes a little bit of time.

“We will have to see what happens but right now I am loving playing football with this group. It has been a great season, there are good times here and it is fun to be part of it.”

Celtic’s win over the Pittodrie side came with only one addition on the field to last season’s Celtic – Moussa Dembele was the only difference – but it has the look of an entirely different Hoops side.

“The manager has given us confidence and awareness,” said Lustig. “There are good players who have come into the team but guys like Scott Brown and James Forrest have been brilliant this season.

“You can always look to the guys who are scoring goals, but this is a proper squad. We have guys willing to come and play wherever they are asked – look at Callum McGregor and the different positions he has played this season.

“If there is someone I want to give credit to, it is him.

“We have a good start in the league and we feel solid. Hopefully we can continue that.

“It is the full team. Watch – we lose the ball and everyone works to get it back.”

Talk of claiming a domestic Treble will intensify now for Celtic under Rodgers, but Lustig is wary of getting far above himself. Not, that he has warned, the Hoops manager would allow it.

“We set a few goals at the start of the season and it is a case of so far so good,” said Lustig. “Getting into the Champions League was one of them, one of the big ones, and we wanted to win everything on offer domestically too. But we will see. We have taken a step but that is all it is.

“There is so much confidence in our team but you have to be careful; as soon as you get a little bit sloppy it can go the other way. We don’t want to be thinking that no-one has beaten us yet here in Scotland because that is when there is complacency and it starts to unravel.

“The manager wouldn’t allow it anyway.

“We need to stay focussed but I think you can count on us to do that.”

He'll be here as long as he's fit and is performing as he has been doing this season.

Not a chance he wants to leave.

I do worry about this contractual situation. Is he thinking his position is under threat when Gamboa was signed and even if Gamboa doesn't work out Brendan will still be looking to replace Lustig? He could get a decent deal at another club if he leaves on a free and if he signs with us will it to be as a backup or will he retain first place?

I think he's well capable of being part of a good team going forward and his position is way down the list of necessary ones we would like to improve.

Why has it gotten to the stage where he can leave on a free?

That's always been a bit of a blind spot with Lawwell. If a player loves the club, Lawwell will just leave negotiations to the last minute. I assume he must have his reasons, but I wish he'd * stop doing it.

Look at Phillip Lahm, 33 and still going strong. Pretty certain Giovanni Van Bronckhorst went into his mid thirties too playing at a top level. See no reason why Lustig can't do the same as long as he remains injury free as he has been this season, or if even when he is getting injured it keeps him out no longer than a couple weeks as opposed to the months and months of lay offs he's had before.

Those mentioning Gamboa as his replacement as well, Gamboa isn't that much younger than him. Gamboa's 27 and Lustig is 29 (Albeit Lustig turns 30 in a couple weeks) so there's only a few years between them.

Hopefully gets that new contract signed up one of our most consistent players and the passion he has for the club is wonderful. Don't know what it is about our club and Swedes but it's usually a match made in heaven.

Oh * aye! Ffs :52: How could I forget him. He was hot and cold though but no doubt when he was hot he was brilliant. Wish he stayed.
