Marvin Compper came in for his first appearance since making his debut in the Scottish Cup quarter-final against Morton back in March.

Whether he can stake a claim for a regular start remains open to debate though, and his manager was less than committal when the question was raised.

“Time will tell,” Rodgers said. “We have a lot of young, exciting players in that position along the back three. They are fast, quick, strong and aggressive.

“They are all alert, developing and improving but it is great. We have a good fight on with them all. We will get them through pre-season and then see where we are.

“Marvin got the game time as did the other players. We look for personality in our players and a lot came in and played with that.”

From the evening times, I may be reading to much into it but it doesn't fill me with confidence.

I really don't know if he's good enough as I have seen absolutely 0 of him against a decent team, but it's quite clear he isn't rated, the past 6 months are no coincidence.

I would be shocked if he went on to become a mainstay in the team.

Yeah I can see what you mean. Hopefully he is just leaving it quite vague and not guaranteeing anything so that all the players work hard and prove themselves.

From what I have read from some fans they were quite impressed with Compper in the friendly last night. If Brendan doesn’t fancy him it was a pointless signing if it was for experience when we already have Kolo Toure here as a coach.

Hopefully Compper does kick on now he is injury free and stake a claim for a starting spot. We need someone with a bit of experience in there and hopefully he can be the man.

Hope so mate but can't really see it myself. But I would love nothing better him being the quality experienced CB we have been crying out for.

I disagree I think he will be offski before the window closes brendans comment "he has a lot of work to do … there is some excellent young defenders ahead of him" he is offski! Shambles of a signing tbh, another one for Congerton!

Makes the Johnny Hayes signing look like an inspired bit of business.

If he’s no rated whoever scouted and suggested him should be sacked what a waste of a signing

Lee Conggerton had apparently been chasing him for years.

Aye this is a weird one, he was clearly our bumber one target. We got him in before the transfer window even opene:, was the opposite of a panic buy.

This is a very odd one.

Has brendan ever been so dismissive with a player before. hes always been fair with players in the past and certainly never down talking their chances to the media. I think somthing has happened behind the scenes.

Why do you think it is that he's had so little game time, any time i've seen him play, and in the WC, i thought he looked pretty good ? :43:

Goes back to the pre-season tour of Austria last year. At breakfast one morning, Anton Rodgers had just poured himself a glass of apple juice and as he went to sit back down at the table, Cristian pulled the chair from under him. Anton fell backgrounds onto the floor pouring apple juice all over himself. The hotel erupted in laughter but Brendan was incensed and stormed off.

That or choosing to play for Costa Rica at the Gold Cup last summer instead of representing Celtic in the CL qualifiers.

Aye your right . We kind of know the reason for that but. When he chose to play for costa Rica last summer instead of our cl qualifiers. Just find this one strange. I don't think it's solely down to lack of ability.

Aye he gave an interview saying as much himself.

Gamboa decided to play for his country at the Gold Cup in the summer instead of representing Celtic in the Champions League qualifiers.

And, after helping to clinch Costa Rica’s qualifying place at the World Cup in Russia next year after a draw against Honduras, the full back admitted his career at Parkhead has stagnated.

He said: “I decided to represent my country at the Gold Cup tournament this summer.

“Unfortunately, I think this has had consequences for me at Celtic.

“Not going with Celtic has proved to be very expensive for me.

“There are decisions made by other people who pick the team and it is not in my hands.

“Apparently, playing at the Gold Cup was not taken in a good way at my club and I have had to wait to play again.”
