Woeful signing without any doubt. We needed a quality defender to try and see us through the Zenit game and with time to bed in for the upcoming qualifiers.

Instead we got an injury prone near 33 year old who had hardly kicked a ball all season and was * cup tied! Been on the pitch less than Lennon since December so we’re at square one with group stage preparation.

The chances of him getting fit enough, up to speed with his team mates and performing well in crucial early season CL games are very slim. I also don’t buy he was signed just for his experience. Nobody at the club will have heard of him, Ayer was hardly at training thinking ‘my * man I’m about to play fives with THE Marvin Compper!’ Chalk and cheese compared to Kolo, a serial winner with literally hundreds of international and European games under his belt for top cubs. Compper let’s be honest is a lower league German journeyman.

Not a huge amount of money wasted but another example that spending ‘big’ money is more often worth it. 4.5 million on relatively proven quality Ntcham - guess what we have a top player on our books. 1-2 million here and there on Compper, Gamboa, Boyata ends up costing us more.

Spend some proper * money on centre back and we’ll rake it back in with the CL qualification and potentially more prize money for draws and wins at that level. It isn’t or shouldn't be rocket science.

How can the scouting team and Brendan Rodgers have got it so wrong that this guy cant even get a game for the first team. We have signed some seriously * players over the years but the vast majority of them were at least deemed good enough to get a few games for the first team. Disastrous signing, who the * sanctioned this? I take it Brendan Rodgers has the final say on who is signed so the blame must lie with him. Peter Lawell must be spitting feathers over this signing, its akin to throwing a million quid down the drain.

Let him get fit, adjust to the city, adjust to the team, get to know the boys. Then he can get a full preseason to get into full gear and he’s ready to go like a new signing in the summer.
