Martinez for Celtic

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by ElPaso, May 31, 2009.

  1. He's an up and coming young manager, has a good reputation in the game, seems very passionate about the game and I like the brand of football he has Swansea playing.

Yes he's inexperienced but then so are most of the other names being mentioned in the press, wouldn't be my first choice but wouldn't be disappointed if he was our new manager either. Whoever comes in should get the full support of us all.

  2. I'd rather we got Martinez than mcghee or mowbray

  3. wud deffo prefer mogga to that muppet

  4. I find it funny the people with the Bilic avatars saying that Martinez is inexperienced, he's managed 4 times as many games as Bilic.

  5. Inexperienced at a high level.

Martinez has never been anywhere near the top level in his life.

Bilic has played in a world cup semi-final, uefa cup semi-final, played with west ham and everton, 44 caps.

Even played under Walter Smith, he knows the workings of the old dinasaur!

  6. So what your saying is that because Bilic was a better footballer than Martinez and played in world cups that means he will be a better manager :56:
Look at Alex Ferguson , he was a * player. Need i say what he has achieved in management

  7. Sorry to pull you up, but Ferguson was actually the most expensive Scottish transfer in his day. He was labelled as poor player, off the back of one performance in the Cup final against Celtic.

  8. Ok fair enough but the point i was making is that being a poor player with no experience at the top level doesnt mean you will be a poor manager

The point is still fairly valid though - great footballer does not make for a great manager and vice versa average footballer does not necessarily make for average manager.

    Prime examples being:

John Barnes (great player * manager)
Alex Ferguson (not a GREAT player - World Class manager)
    Jose Mourinho
    Arsene Wenger

I'm sure the list could go on

  9. Of course not. But i can help when you have a CL league qualifier an the players in the dressing room can look at someone who has been there and done it, not someone who at the top of his game played for Motherwell.

  10. Regardless of that we all know good players don't necessarily make gd managers.

Some gd players do make gd managers but some gd managers were barely even players - Mourinho, Wenger.

Lets judge the manager on how he manages.

  11. But players don't care/realise what their managers past experience was whether it was playing for motherwell or liverpool. They will see him in training everyday , understand how he wants them to play and if they start getting results then im sure they will respect him

  12. I agree totally. It's just this myth that Ferguson (who I don't particularly like) was * is perpetuated. It must stop!

    Who are you talking about?

  15. :56::50: I haven't a clue how good he was, just heard he was a bit * back in the day. I'll take your word for it!

  16. Thanks for that Rendog :50:

He talks a good game anyway:

I've only watched a couple of Swansea games but each time they played well.

Of course he would be a risk, as would all the managers we've been linked with this past week, I don't really see how he's any worse that the others.

  17. Really dont know anything about the guy so i'll defo give him achance and see how it goes.

  18. Sent a txt msg to my brother about Martinez. He isn't a Celtic fan but is big into his continental football, football magazines etc. I'm not saying he's an expert but he has big interest and is well read and his reply on Martinez was this (remember he has no bias for Celtic):

I know more about Martinez than you think. i watched a programme on him which prompted me to read up on him. He's very highly rated as an up and coming manager and his methods are quite fresh, innovative and so far successful. He's supposed to be a very good man manager and motivator - brought great unity and team spirit to swansea through things like insisting ALL the multi national players and staff spoke English, made them eat breakfast and lunch together at the club, and where possible didn't allow 3 or more nationaliites to sit at the one table. Alot of stuff like that. The football Swansea play is very well regarded too.

Bit of an essay i know, but sounds promising and tends to fit in with that link rendog posted.
