Not really fair to say he's done nothing since leaving us, he took an average, bottom half Villa side and turned then into a top 6 team, reaching domestic cup finals and was unlucky not to beat Man U in the Carling cup final. Really hope it works out for him at Sunderland, he's one of the best managers around.

What other reasons would there have been behind him leaving when he did though? He won the Scottish Cup with us in his very last game in charge and was on good terms, as far as I'm aware, with all of the supporters and the people behind the scenes at the club at the time of his departure.

I believe that he left because his wife needed a full time carer when she was at a particularly rough stage of her illness. No hidden agendas, or anything else. If his wife had have been in good health, then he might still have been here even now.

Never bought into MON considering the players and money at his disposal during his tenure at paradise, im not surprised he is struggling a wee bit. Just my tuppence worth.

I am inclined to agree!! Actually got some pretty sick abuse yesterday on Twitter when I dared to suggest that MON wasn't the messiah we all seem to remember and that he is playing the same style and tactics of football he did at Leicester....

The reason I am cynical about O'Neill departing when he did is if anyone remembers he was hotly tipped for the Man Utd job...... And Ferguson had announced he would be retiring the very summer O'Neill decided to step down.

O'Neills wife had been ill on and off for a couple of years up until that point, I just found it convenient he chose to resign from us when the biggest job in English football was becoming available which he was allegedly a shoe-in for.

i read this on Wiki this morning....

    Leeds United contract

Revelations in Peter Risdale's book 'United We Fall', later confirmed by O'Neill,[20] have shown that he signed a conditional agreement with Ridsdale in January 2003, to leave Celtic and become Leeds United manager. This deal subsequently fell through on the departure of Ridsdale from Leeds, one of the conditions for the deal, and the failure of Ridsdale to remove Terry Venables as manager. O'Neill has since hit out at Ridsdale, describing the agreement as 'full of conditions that hadn't been true' and blaming Celtic's failure to offer a new contract as his reason for the deal

so decided to investigate and came across this: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/408911/.html

never knew about that...if it is indeed true

I'm thankful for the times he has given us in the past, but it could be true that MON is a wee tad overrated.
