Mark Hughes 'will not price himself out of Celtic vacancy', says assistant

Mar 30 2010 Exclusive by Gavin Berry

Mark Hughes won't price himself out of a move to Celtic if Parkhead chiefs decide to make a move for the Welshman.
The ex-Manchester City gaffer has been out of work since being sacked from Eastlands at the end of last year after just 18 months in charge of the megabucks Premiership outfit.
Hughes - second favourite to current caretaker Neil Lennon with the bookies - is now looking to get back into the game but is waiting for the right move and is more interested in the stature of the club than the personal money on offer.
The fact cash isn't a motivating factor will be a huge relief to Celtic chief Peter Lawwell with fears that Hughes - on £2million a year at City - was out of the SPL side's price range. He is in demand and has already knocked back six job opportunities and held talks with the Ivory Coast before they unveiled Sven-Goran Eriksson as their World Cup boss.
But Celtic, looking for a permanent successor to flop boss Tony Mowbray, are believed to have made contact with Hughes' advisor Kia Joorabchian and in a Record Sport exclusive, his most trusted ally Mark Bowen insisted money is the last thing on his mind.
Former Welsh international Bowen was Hughes' No. 2 at both Blackburn and City and knows him better than anyone in football and says the right club is what matters most to them both.
He said: "We're not in the business of just going in and getting a fat cheque and thinking 'Well, if things go wrong we'll be out in a year's time and we'll go somewhere else'.
"Mark has always said it has to be the right vehicle, the right situation. He's always been a manager or coach who wants to go in and build a place and make a difference long term.
"It's what we did with Wales and Blackburn and we were in the process of doing at Manchester City. "It seems to be the natural thing at the moment that Mark is linked with any vacant manager's position. His talents are widely recognised and since City we've been waiting for the right opportunity.
"In that sense, I suppose we were expecting this speculation and it's a pleasant expectation to see that he's been linked with the Celtic post.
"Mark's credentials are there for all to see."

Seems Sparky might genuinely be interested in coming up here. Out of all the names that have been linked with the job so far he is the most appealing one to me. Unless Neily proves to be a managerial genius between now and the end of the season of course....... :icon_mrgreen:

Thuggish, route 1 system that would be the same as us under Martin O'neil then i have no problems with that. If he takes the job the club should not force Lennon on him as his * manager im sorry but that makes no sence he should be able to have his own man who he has worked with before .His record in the transfer market on budget is fantastic . he also gets the best out of his players .That was something that Martin was excellent at he gets the player to go the extra mile and his side's play with passion and desire something in which we have badly lacked and if he makes us stronger and plays a little more route one Ie like we did with Sutton and Hartson is anyone really going to moan ? Tony was 3rd choice look where that got us ditch this needs to be celtic minded and lets get the best man there is in for the job to me that screams out Mark Hughes anyone with any sence can see this lets hope the board can aswell. Lennon needs to go off and learn his trade he cant learn here its far too big a gamble Lennon v Smith = no contest smith wins hands down , Lennon needs to do what Lambert has done go off down south and make his way in the game , Even Lambert aint ready yet he is still learning and needs to be left alone and able to go up and have a crack at the championship maybe even prem before he comes anywhere near here .

If you actually consider what he did at Blackburn, you would see they weren't quite 'thuggish'.

He did what he had to do initially to keep them up, and that was make them physically tougher and hard to beat. He added guys like Mokoena and Nelsen who were strong players, and good leaders.

Yes, he added more players of that sort, eg Santa Cruz, Samba. But he also had players like Bentley, Pedersen and Dunn in the side and had them playing decent stuff at times.

I guess what I'm saying is, don't write him off as being a 'route 1' manager. He .did what it took to succeed at Rovers.

Doubt he will be at Celtic next season, though

There is no doubting Lennon's passion for Celtic - he wears his heart on his sleeve but i cant help but feel that he is not ready to manage Celtic FC. I also believe that Celtic will win most, if not all of our remaining games this season but that wont be down to excellent management or excellent tactics but will have more to do with heart, passion and drive. Lennie is vastly inexperienced on a whole number of managerial fronts and i don't think the board will risk us losing yet another league against a rangers team that is no more than a glorified pub team.

I would have Lambert before Lennon because he has SOME experience and he has a decent record but even he isn't ready.

Mark Hughes for me every time

Out of the realistic candidates on this list the only ones I have any interest in are Neil Lennon, Mark Hughes and Slaven Bilic. Roy Keane is too much of a gamble and I wouldn't be over enamoured if any of the others got the job.

This is the dealbreaker for me.

His style is the complete opposite of the Celtic Way.
He would make a classic Rangers manager - NOT a Celtic manager.

People have very short memories. It's less than twelve months since Gordon Strachan stepped down. Despite having the best record of success of any Celtic manager since Stein, he was pretty much forced out by fan pressure. Why? Because people said his style of play wasn't entertaining enough.

Hughes will make Gordon Strachan look like Mario * Zagallo.

He is Sam Allardyce without the charisma. His route one * would be a disaster for the club.

I remember him at Man City. Despite having the richest backers in world football, he could only finish tenth in the first season, and couldnae buy a win away from home. Then in his second season - after further big spending - he got the boot after a straight run of two wins out of eleven games. He is not even effective.

There was a lot of politics going on in the background at Manchester City this season when Hughes was there. There probably still is now. Hughes had Robinho thrust upon him by the Arab owners and he was also under instructions to put Robinho in the team when it seemed quite clear he didn't want to. As Hearts have proven, when you start forcing a manager to pick players he doesn't want to pick then it will inevitably end in tears.

Hughes did a solid job for Wales and did an excellent job for Blackburn. I'd be more inclined to look at what he did for those teams than what he did for Man City. With Wales he had limited talent to work with(just like Celtic) yet he did ok and at Blackburn he made a fair few decent budget signings(something he will also have to do if he comes to Celtic). Even though it didn't work out at Man City he has demonstrated some managerial abilities that would serve him well if he became our manager.

Lambert has shortened to 11/4 in the last four hours.

Wouldn't read too much into that, but we can always hope.

Cos if Lenny and Mark Hughes are the competition, I'd personally transport Lambert up here in a * rickshaw.

Will people please stop banging on about Gordon Strachan....

Yes he won 3iar but fact is his record after christmas in his last season proved the team had gone stale and he was no longer capable of getting the best out of them...

he is gone and its time for people to move on stop bleating on about him

It's a perfectly valid point regardless of who the manager is. We had 3 seasons of success and 1 failure. The football was wrongly deemed to be unattractive and look where we are now - took in an inexperienced former player to play "the celtic way" and has put us back years.

3 titles for every 1 failure and 2 CL last sixteens for every 2 are frankly incredible ratios. It's a shame that 1 season of mediocre football destroyed that teams image, because I'm sure the groundwork was there to be re-developed.
