Im probably half way between your two opinions.

In one sense, it feels pretty unjustifiable to make the centre of london only accessible to rich people and poor people. Given there are thousands of middle earning people spending thousands of pounds to commute for a few hours each days in and out of London, wouldnt it make sense to give them first dibs on cheap housing in London? There really isnt much of a justification to house the poorest people in the middle of london who dont need to be there ahead of people who do need to be there. It is a crazy situation when council housing costs 500pm in Kensington and average private rent is 2500pm. It prices any average person out completely.

That said, if you do remove the poor then you only really push the social problems out of sight of the rich and you disenfranchise them further. And you pretty much remove almost all locals in favour of the global rich.

Well here is a fuking surprise. the building is declared unsafe and will have to be demolished.

People are now being displaced from their burnt out homes and if they dont accept what they are offerd thy go o the ba k of the housing waiting list.

The rich will not have to look at a high rise building any more .

new houses to be built on charred land ,bids have been made on the vacant land, to many millions for me to say

Was in Sao Paulo for the world cup, literally lots of people sleeping under blankets in the street, near to but not too close (security guards ) to high quality housing, sickening.
In London the people who actually run the city but are not high waged will increasingly get moved further out from the centre increasing commute times etc, centre of London will be like some gated resort with the staff brought in to service it

Grenfell Tower fire survivors to be rehomed in flats on luxury development

    21st June 2017, 13:55

The Government has purchased apartments at an upmarket development to rehouse survivors of the Grenfell Tower blaze.

Sixty-eight new social housing units at the Kensington Row development in Kensington High Street have been acquired, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said.

Prices for homes on the site - which includes a private cinema and a 24-hour concierge service - range from £1.5m to £8.5m.

Developer St Edward, a joint venture between the Berkeley Group and Prudential, has committed extra construction staff and relaxed working time restrictions to complete the project by the end of July.

Tony Pidgley, chairman of the Berkeley Group, said staff would "work night and day to get these homes ready" so families "can start to rebuild their lives".

The flats - a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments - will be offered as one of the options to permanently rehouse residents from Grenfell Tower.

Additional Whitehall cash has also been made available to furnish the flats to speed up the move.

The properties, in two affordable housing blocks at the site, are situated around 1.5 miles from Grenfell Tower.

The announcement comes a week after a fire destroyed the 24-storey block in west London - with at least 79 people now dead or missing, presumed dead.

"The residents of Grenfell Tower have been through some of the most harrowing and traumatic experiences imaginable and it is our duty to support them," said Mr Javid.

"Our priority is to get everyone who has lost their home permanently rehoused locally as soon as possible, so that they can begin to rebuild their lives.

"The Government will continue to do everything we can as fast as we can to support those affected by this terrible tragedy."

So far 110 housing needs assessments have been carried out as work continues to identify the displaced and match them to suitable housing.

Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged to rehouse all those who lost their homes in the inferno and "have been left with nothing" at the earliest possible opportunity, within three weeks at the latest.

She has faced criticism of her handling of the crisis and decision to not meet with survivors in the immediate aftermath.

After confirming a public inquiry into the blaze, plans for an independent public advocate to help bereaved families after major disasters were announced in the Queen's Speech.

Last week, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for empty homes near the scene of the fire in north Kensington to be requisitioned to house families.

Meanwhile, Airbnb has called on its London hosts to open their homes for free to Red Cross staff and volunteers who have been supporting those affected by the fire.

The 60/68 flats were always supposed to be social housing. I read some people say it's actually a different block. They also won't be allowed access to the cinema or concierge service.

The flats will all be supplied fully furnished.

Not that I wish the fire on anyone, but it's a really good deal for many.

The only other issue is many were staying illegally in Grenfell Tower. They think there was as much as 600 people living there. There was only 127 flats with a total of 227 bedrooms.

There was lots of people sub-letting and also a lot of people staying illegally.

It does read as the papers are trying to stir a negative reaction to the Grenfell Tower residents now. The initial reaction was of disgust and everything should be done to help them.

Now that they've been forced to hand out posh flats, as it's about all they've got access to, It really has stirred people up and the stories are now negative.

It doesn't help with the reporting of it, but the council/government are now in a damned if they do and damned if they don't situation.

Must be honest I was in a rush & just saw the bullet points like " The Government has purchased apartments at an upmarket development to rehouse survivors of the Grenfell Tower blaze." & "Prices for homes on the site - which includes a private cinema and a 24-hour concierge service - range from £1.5m to £8.5m."

Obviously it's not the full story, I had just got up & was tired.:fear:

It turns out that the fire started in a fridge freezer which ignited the insulation in the walls which apparently was more flammable than the cladding.

Not one * has been given about resident safety in this building.
