Celtic loanee Liam Shaw has opened up on his time at the club, reflecting on his disappointment at not playing despite "giving his all".

The Englishman has made only two competitive appearances for the Hoops since joining the Parkhead side in the summer of 2021.

He came highly rated from Sheffield Wednesday but has struggled to make an impact at the Scottish champions.

A loan spell with the Motherwell in the second half of last season did not improve his fortunes as he featured only five times for the Fir Park club.

Now on loan at Morecombe, the 21-year-old has addressed his time in Glasgow and spoken about his struggles with not playing regularly.

Speaking to The Players Piece Podcast, he said: "[I want to] keep Morecambe up and then go back to Celtic, and whatever will be will be.

"If I'm not part of the plans obviously I will go out on loan again.

"I didn't really play much for six months when I was at Wednesday, then for another six months with Celtic.

"That was a year where I didn't play, and that was one of the toughest parts of my career because I just wanted to play.

"That first six months at Celtic, I gave everything, to be fair. I felt like I trained well but obviously I wasn't doing enough to get in the team.

"I went on loan to Motherwell and even then I was in and out of the Motherwell team."

Wigan Athletic closing in on Celtic midfielder as recruitment continues
Wigan Athletic are closing in on the capture of Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw.

The 22-year-old spent last term on loan with Morecambe, although he was unable to prevent the Shrimps being relegated to League Two.

However, Shaw's performances - alongside ex-DW Academy star Jensen Weir - during his 39 appearances caught the eye of Latics and Shaun Maloney

And he's in line to become the Latics boss' seventh signing of an increasingly busy summer.

Shaw came through the ranks at hometown club Sheffield Wednesday, before moving to Celtic in the summer of 2021.

He found game-time hard to come by in Glasgow, and was loaned out to Motherwell in January 2022 prior to his spell at Morecambe the following season

Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm the season-long loan of Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw, subject to EFL and FA approval, and international clearance.

Shaw, 22, has arrived at the DW Stadium on the back of a productive loan spell with Morecambe, where he played over 30 games for the Shrimps at the Mazuma Stadium.

Hailing from South Yorkshire, Shaw began his career at Sheffield Wednesday, with a loan at non-league side Chesterfield providing him with the platform to make his professional breakthrough for the Owls in the prolonged 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Having made his senior debut off the bench in an away win at Queens Park Rangers, a first senior start followed 11 days later against Middlesbrough. It was in the 2020/21 season where Shaw really started to establish himself at Hillsborough, making 22 appearances across all competitions, scoring his first professional goal in a 2-1 home win over Boro.

After being with the Owls since the age of eight, Shaw opted for a change in scenery and moved north of the border to join Scottish giants Celtic FC in the summer of 2021 on a long-term contract.

The youngster’s debut for the Hoops came in the Europa League Group Stage, with Shaw featuring for 65 minutes in a 3-2 win over Spanish side Real Betis. Shortly after making his league bow against St Mirren, Shaw headed to Motherwell for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign a month later.

A return to England was next on the cards for Shaw, as he joined Morecambe on a season-long loan last summer, where he was a teammate of Latics Academy graduate Jensen Weir.

The experience certainly allowed him to experience the rigours of senior football, as Shaw made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Shrimps, with all but four coming in League One. He made positive contributions at both ends of the field, most memorably scoring the winner against Accrington Stanley at the Wham last Christmas.

Shaw showed a high level of versatility, playing a number of different positions, despite being a central midfielder by trade. The 22-year-old will now link up with Shaun Maloney’s squad for the duration of the 2023/24 League One campaign, becoming the Club’s seventh signing of the Summer Transfer Window.

Commenting on his move to the DW Stadium, Shaw said:

“I’m really happy to be here. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, getting to know the boys, and getting to business.

“It’s a massive Club, and when I spoke to the Manager, I really bought into his vision and I can’t wait to get started!"

    First-Team Manager, Shaun Maloney added:

“I’m really happy that Liam has joined the Football Club. I have to thank Celtic who pushed hard with us to get this deal done quickly.

“Liam can play many different positions - as a defensive and attacking midfielder - and he started off at centre back at Sheffield Wednesday.

“He’s a really good player and now our squad is really starting to take shape. He’s a great character and brings a different profile physically so I’m glad Liam has joined us for the season, and I hope he’s ready to fight for our cause.”

Be a good move for him but would obviously rather a permanent deal so we get a fee, another loan is another year off his deal and a smaller fee when he eventually does leave permanently

He hasn't done anything to warrant a permanent move. If he does well in league 1 he might at least get a shot somewhere next summer.
