Enigma of a player. Clearly overall better suited to being a CB than a LB but one if his biggest strengths is his end product (he has a great cross and shot) which he'll never be able to showcase as a CB.

He'd have to suddenly get as decent as someone like Stan Varga...that man could burst a ball.

Could need him for squad depth if the Bernabei rumours are true...

Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin believes there is no reason why the Dons can't re-enter talks with Celtic about the permanent signing ofLiam Scales in January. The Granite City side tried to nail down the Hoops centre-back on a long-term deal, but the Glasgow club were only prepared to let the player leave on loan.

So far, the Irishman has impressed in Goodwin's backline, keeping a clean-sheet against St Johnstone and acting as a brick wall in defence.

With his eye-catching displays, Scales is still someone the Dons boss would be keen on bringing in permanently.

He said: "There's nothing to suggest that we won't enter into conversation with Celtic again in January to see if we can make it more of a permanent fixture but for the time being it's a loan.

"He's a fantastic player, he's doing great, he's very consistent in his performances which is all you want. For the time being he is very much our player."

The calm manner of the 24-year-old on the pitch is not something that has surprised the Aberdeen manager.

He said: "We knew the type of boy we were getting anyway.

"He's not one that's got a big ego. he's happy to come in and get on with things. Not only is he good around the place, within the dressing room. He's also a very, very good player and that's why we pushed so hard to bring him here."

It is clear that there are high expectations for the centre-back for both club and country. The Dons boss believes the Irishman can gain his first cap whilst plying his trade at Pittodrie.

See at the end of the day if he continues to do well at Aberdeen he will transform himself from being a £500k punt from us into a potentially £2-3m asset that would attract English Championship interest. Even if he isn’t deemed good enough for us we won’t lose out of this sort of move.

Aberdeen loan signing Liam Scales puts thoughts about his future on hold

Centre-back Scales is on a season-long loan from Premiership champions Celtic.

Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin has confirmed he wants to secure the 24-year-old on a permanent contract.

The Dons attempted to secure Scales on a permanent contract earlier this summer but Celtic were not willing to sell.

That meant a loan was the only way Goodwin could bring the defender to Pittodrie.

Aberdeen are set to launch a fresh bid to secure Scales permanently during the January transfer window.

Scales admits his confidence has sky-rocketed at Aberdeen under a manager who “trusts” him.

However until that bid to land him permanently becomes concrete Scales, contracted to Celtic until summer 2025, is focused solely on impressing with the Reds.

Asked if he is contemplating his long term future, Scales said: “Not really.

“It has not been put in my hands yet so I’m not thinking about it.

“I just know I am here for the season.

“At the moment I’m taking it week by week and trying to make a good impression on everyone.

“Until something like that could materialise it is really out of my hands.

“So there’s not really much point thinking too deeply about that at the moment.”

‘I have a manager who trusts me’
Scales transferred to Parkhead from Shamrock Rovers in a £500,000 deal last summer.

He made 13 appearances for Celtic last season, including starts in Europe against Real Betis and Bodo Glimt.

However he struggled to get game time in the second half of the season.

Following a loan move he is relishing life at Pittodrie under manager Goodwin who has started him in every game he has been available.

Goodwin recently ruled out a late bid to secure Scales on a permanent deal before the transfer window closes on Thursday at midnight

Scales said: “I have a manager who trusts me and who has backed me so far.

“I feel I’m playing well because of the confidence I’ve got.

“It’s nice to be properly involved, it’s going well and I’m enjoying it.

“I’ve settled in well and Aberdeen is a nice place.

“When you are just coming up here for trips to play football, all you see is the hotel room and the stadium.

“Now I have seen more of Aberdeen, it’s a good city.”

    Confidence has returned at Aberdeen
Scales’ last appearance for Celtic was when starting a 2-0 Europa Conference League defeat away to Norwegians Bodo Glimt on February 24.

He admits the lack of game time with the Hoops was tough on his confidence.

Now that self belief has sky rocketed with regular starts at Aberdeen under a manager keen to secure him permanently.

He said: “I feel confident at the moment.

“At the end of last season I was probably low because I hadn’t played that much

I came from Shamrock Rovers where I was playing every week.

“I probably needed the first couple of months at Celtic to get up to speed with the different levels.

“There was a couple of months where I was in and out and probably played ten times between November and January.

“I thought I did okay and then the second half of the season wasn’t as good.

“It was tough not being involved.

“Coming into training on a Monday knowing you don’t have much of a chance of playing is tough.

“When all the lads are at the stadium preparing for a game but you’re at the training ground doing a session with the fitness coach it’s mentally tough.

“But it happens at every club in the country and it’s part of the game.

“I am glad to be out of it now and in a different cycle where I am playing every weekend.”

I needed to go out on loan’
Scales missed the opening game of the Premiership season against Celtic (2-0 loss) due to the terms of his loan agreement.

He will be ineligible for every game against Celtic this season, unless the Reds secure him on a permanent deal in January.

Scales: “This season I knew I needed to go out on loan and with the age I’m at, to play regular football.

“When you are training every day knowing you have a chance of playing on a Saturday your mindset is different.

“When you know you’re not going to play, it’s hard to keep yourself up.

“You do your best but it can be hard to be as motivated for training as you do when you’re in and about the team and playing.

You know then that you have to prepare right for the game and perform as well as you can.

“I needed this season to show what I am about.

“I’m happy the gaffer has given me the chance

THE BOARDS of Celtic and Aberdeen are to hold a meeting over the future of Liam Scales.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan at Pittodrie for the campaign and has started all but three games in the Premiership so far.

For two of those absences the opposition was parent club Celticmeaning the only eligible game he missed out on was the home clash with Kilmarnock in October.

It's been a successful spell for Scaleswho had left Glasgow on a temporary basis in the summer in search of regular first team football.

The deal is agreed to last until the end of the season but The Hoops have an option to bring their defender back in January if they wish to do so.

Jim Goodwin and Aberdeen are hopeful Ange Postecoglou won't need to activate the clause thanks to his bolstered options in defence

They expect confirmation of what will be happening soon either way, with meetings between the boards of the two set to take place.

The Dons manager said: "The chairman was due to speak to Celtic’s board to get a feel for what their thoughts are. I know that Steven Gunn (Director of Football) has been on to Celtic already.

"I think we will get confirmation on that one pretty soon.

"Obviously Celtic have signed another defender who will be coming into their fold in January.

The boy (Moritz) Jenz was on the bench for them on Saturday and Starfelt is back now.

Realistically I’m not sure they will be needing Liam back but we will have to wait to get that confirmed.”

No reason why he should be recalled, he's doing well leave him there and assess in the summer where he will likely be sold

Could be more to discuss a permanent transfer. I don't see any reason at all why he would be called back or needed to be called back.
