He was nothing but a Dermot Desmond vanity signing.

I’d be flabbergasted if he even made it at Aberdeen, tbh.

I think people on here are giving him a harder time than he deserves. He looked competent till that Bodo game i thought where he was * awful mind you. The guys not been a pro that long due to university, maybe won't make it here but I think he'll be pretty good at aberdeen etc.

Aberdeen will ramp up their interest in Liam Scales this week as they bid to thrash out a deal with Celtic.

The Dons are keen to sign the left-sided defender from the champions, with manager Jim Goodwin a long-term admirer of his fellow Irishman

Sources in Ireland have confirmed Scales would be interested in moving north to Pittodrie to get regular first-team football.

The 23-year-old arrived at Parkhead last summer from Shamrock Rovers.

He’s played in 13 games for Ange Postecoglou’s side but has been very much on the fringes.

Aberdeen would prefer a permanent move but, with the finances concerned, a loan deal is more likely.

Goodwin is looking to revamp his squad after his team finished just above the relegation places.

Don't think he's as bad as some say, however if he was one of the best that the LOI has to offer i wouldn't be in a hurry to rush back.

Be a good move for him. Decent enough at times but not quite near the standard we need

It's hard to judge him on what little we have seen, but I see him more as a CB that's been used at left back (not just by us), has done ok at times, but it's not really his position. I think it would be a good move for him if, as seems to be the case, he's being lined up to play his more natural CB role and we can see what he offers there.

I certainly saw some decent flashes from him.

If you compare him with Taylor - who most thought was crap but definitely improved with extended minutes - I don't think there's a lot of difference there.

Scales has enough to make it if given time, but he probably won't get it with us.

Thing is, with a club like celtic as well as someone like Ange at the helm, every player on the field needs to have a certain level of technical ability to them and play a dynamic fast direct game.

Especially the full backs... guys like Ralston and Taylor have come on leaps and bounds without a doubt but it's still glaringly obvious what their limitations do to the style of play.

Scales unfortunately appears to be a level below them still, so a move to a club like Aberdeen could be good for his career.

Scales doesn’t have football IQ. If he did he would have unseated Taylor before he got back from injury. He just doesn’t know where to be and when.

When you watch Taylor, he’s not the fastest or most athletic, but he knows how to move the ball up the pitch, either by playing the right pass, showing for the ball, making a run that creates space or makes a run to receive the ball in an attacking position. Taylor does all this, without getting in the way of other players.

Scales gets in the way and doesn’t understand how to rotate and pick up the correct positions.

If we could recoup most of the £500k paid we should just do it. I think Scales could be a decent SPL level CB in a back 3 or left back but he isn’t at the level we need and is too old to hang on to.

We will definitely bring in another left back to compete with Taylor and Scales is well down our CB ratings so he will be lucky to get 7-10 games a season here and just waste away.

I said it when we signed him this was nothing more than a money switch from Celtic to Rovers by Desmond.. nothing I've seen changes my opinion..

He's a decent player just not good enough for Celtic.. I hope he does well at Aberdeen and wish him all the best if he goes there... even if he is a Sham haha

At the risk of sounding like Brendan Rodgers, Scales has a "cultured" left foot. It's a shame that's about all he has but. He's a poor defender imo, especially at left back. Lacks pace and is positionally all over the shop. I don't like Taylor but he's lightyears ahead.

I'd send him to Aberdeen on a 12 month loan and see if he improves. There's some potential there, but it looks unlikely that he'll ever make it here. The problem is that when we send players out on loan, half of the time they don't even get a game at that club. There's loads recently who were clearly good enough to play but sat their arses on a bench full of cannon fodder. The likes of Henderson, Shaw, Montgomery etc.

Ajer and Hjelde are the only two I can think of that actually played a sufficient amount of games in recent times.

Taylor is literally light years ahead of Scales and always has been. He’s also only about 9 months older than him.

Don't forget Christie, Morgan also got played plenty but that was as part of the signing, Montgomery is maybe being harsh as he took an injury but is also fair, he probably should have been getting more before then.

Taylor is so far ahead of Scales it’s not even funny :giggle1:

And even at that we need a * massive upgrade on Taylor for Europe…

Bit of a random side note to make but your first sentence reminds of Bauer.

When we got him in on loan I thought his right foot and crossing ability were actually...outstanding. he was just utter garbage at literally everything else any person needs to play football

    Of course he is now...

But everyone thought Taylor was rubbish 12 months ago (and Ralston) but with Ange's coaching and minutes on the park they've both improved - Ralston out of sight.

I don't think Taylor started from that much higher a base.

Mind you, I fully concede I haven't seen very much of Scales. Also agree we need a Juranovic quality LB to come in.

To be fair Christie was already established at ICT before coming here, and as you said Morgan was always gonna go back to St Mirren and play there as part of the deal.

But yeah future loans should include assurances re: playing time etc. For example Shaw is easily good enough to be a starter for Motherwell and play all of their games. Why on earth did he barely feature? It's bizarre and it happens too much

Bit unfair to compare Taylor and scales in terms of age of development. Taylor has been a full time professional since being a teenager while scales is barely two years out of third level education. When Taylor signed for Celtic scales was in college ffs. A full professional season at Aberdeen would tell a lot, he has the potential for a lot of upside.
