    Maybe not.

But what they ultimately show- is that unlike yourself who believes following a club like Celtic is nothing more than watching a game of football- for others supporting the club is much more than that. It shows that for many supporters, footballing greats and Celtic legends, that supporting Celtic (and indeed many other clubs) incorporates a number of things outside of football- including politics. But, perhaps most importantly, what it demonstrates for many, is that it is the supporters which ultimately define what a club is and means. And throughout Celtic's history, its supporters have been pretty clear in defining the club.

Where did I say its nothing more than watching a game of football.

What I said is, its not political.

    History does not mean politics.

Where did I say my politics are in correlation with the team I support?

    Good point.

I got into Celtic as a kid because I liked their football and to my, somewhat young eyes, they seemed to play the way football was meant to be played.

I understood football long before I understood politics.

I said this earlier in the thread Ho. It's like with Real Madrid - they are a 'fascist' club because a bad man supported them once upon a time and they are Barcelona's rivals. And we are a 'left-wing' club...overlooking the fact that Lawwell probably earns £700k+, Desmond is a multimillionaire, and some of our players earn tens of thousands a week. Hardly Baader-Meinhof stuff is it!:56:

One thing i cant figure out, if Barca are known as being so Left-Wing how come in the Catalonia elections the biggest party is a center-right party??
And figuring that most of the area supports Barca its confusing..

    Let the people sing,
Despite what people are saying about it just being a game of football and how politics should not be involved, regardless of whether they should or should not, it just is. No other way to put it, politics is involved for many folk in football and it always will be. The fundamental social situation of a crowd who regularly congregate in the one place and also who are there to see an opponent from somewhere actually guarantees this to some degree. And in my opinion the underlying purpose of this thread was to discuss the politics that are associated with these certain clubs, not continually argue over what the situation is at Celtic nor to remonstrate on whether politics should be involved with club football.

People support a team to watch the football, some watch purely because they win trophies often, some go because the club is local, some go because their family or friends went and some go because of a shared political identity with fans of that club. Some appear unable to deal with this.

Yep was it not a Red Star Belgrade and Dynamo Zagreb game that sparked Yugoslavia into war,ok there was other political stuff going on at the time but that kicked it off,to say politics isn't or shouldn't be in football is rather naive

Politics is not a raison d'être for any football club in the world.

the point still stands. There are no clubs formed on the basis of politics. Just political parties do that. Fans do their best to bring their political nonsense to the ground.

There is no right or left wing clubs. By clubs I mean the clubs. Not the political fans aligning themselves to the club.

I don't think it's possible to get a left-wing paramilitary that murders innocent civilians....

How about clubs formed/named by political events/factions? Some that I can think of are Bordeaux, CSKA, Dinamo Moscow, NE Revolution and more. I know that is not the basis of the fans but there is a small amount of political influence on some clubs. What's your view/opinion on them?

Some sponsors attach themselves to clubs to gain political favour, even very minor clubs, helps put through planning etc.:icon_mrgreen:

Also Mandela United Football Club in SA:icon_mrgreen:
