I agree with you to some extent.

However, supporting a football team (or at least any great and/or unique one) is almost entirely tribal. It can incorporate anything from religion, background, and even politics (and everything in between). If it was solely down to footballing matters we would all be 'glory-hunters', we would all support Barcelona. I would say tribalism is the biggest factor in dictating how most people choose (or inherit) their support of a club, and in many circumstances the 'politics' of a club and its supporters is a huge part of that.

It's the supporters that ultimately make and define a football club. And for many it's not just a 'sports club'.

Why do any of us support Celtic? Why do you think Celtic can command a support from across the globe? Do you think it's because of the great football they play against the likes of St Mirren and Inverness etc?

I think the great Tommy Burns put it perfectly: 'When you pull on that jersey you're not just playing for a football club, you're playing for a people and a cause.'

 

I support Celtic for the brand of football played and the clubs history on the pitch nothing more.

It depends on your view point. I view it as north of Ireland a part Eire so for me and many like me the troubles were in Ireland not Britain.

But you must understand, for a lot of people it's much more than that. Not all people pick and choose their teams based on how many trophies a club has won or what style of football they play, as I mentioned before, most of us would support Barcelona if that was the case. Celtic have went through spells when their brand of football has been dire and appalling to say the least, and still commanded a worldwide support, simply because- I would argue- supporting a club is much bigger/more important than footballing reasons.

 

Yeah totally! I am cool with type of support other than people who jump every week. I agree we are more than a club though and that is one reason this club is so special. For me it wasn't politics at all.

First part I was saying I hate the Glory Hunter/Bandwagon fan.

Secondly I just love that this club is so global and majority of the fans are awesome and very welcoming. This is the only club in the British Isles that feels like everyone is family and we all look out for each other.

But with all due respect, most 'glory-hunters' would cite the exact same reasons you have for supporting certain clubs.

What is it, do you think, which breeds that uniqueness? What is it that makes Celtic so different from other clubs with great footballing histories and who play a great brand of football?

I grew up 5 minute walk from Celtic Park. I know my history. Its not politics. I love the club for being the sports club it is. Not somewhere to wave my palestine flag etc etc

 

First part you are right. But the big difference for us vs RM ManU and such is our league. Many would shy away from Celtic due to the lack of competition even with Rangers were around. I have been with the club since 2010 (when I started following European Football) and been through the good and bad time, wouldn't change that for the world.

I think the clubs mission statement is what does it for me. A club based on charity. Plus might be a little of the Irish Heritage part. Since my Grandfather was born in Erie I am eligible for citizenship haha.

 

Just to be clear, I'm not calling you a 'glory-hunter', I was highlighting that the reasons you gave may very well be the reasons cited by 'glory-hunters' justifying their support of certain clubs. There hasn't really been many 'bad times' since 2010, if you put it into any sort of context, but I understand what you mean.

Is that not political? The creation of a football club as a charity to help the poor of Glasgow's east-end in the 1800s, the majority of whom were victims of a man-made famine in Ireland, who were/are hated beacuse of their nationality and/or religion? Is the fact that you recognise it's down to 'a little of the Irish Heritage part' not also partly political?
