The yellow card for Kyogo was shocking. Just seen it again in the highlights.

He missed a ridiculous amount of chances in the Europa League and even more in the CL. He'll always miss opportunities regardless of form, we can't afford that when we only play with one striker.

8 European games without a goal isn't acceptable. He's way too lightweight too, every CB at this level can easily brush him aside.

I said it at the start of the champions league campaign about Big Jackie starting instead of Kyogo and people said nah, no way, talked about states in the Europa etc when Big Jackie wasn’t fit.

Jackie offers us something different up top in Europe, harassing defenders, bullying them and for me is the better option and it showed.

Kyogo should have been used as an impact sub when defences are starting to get knackered and use his pace.

Next year I want Big Jackie starting.

It is selfish but being selfish isn’t always a negative. Quite natural for our fans to care more about having players ready for our games, than international selection.

This is an underrated part of the point, imo. Massively increases the risk of injury.

You’ve only to look at Kyogo’s leg the wrong way and something pings in it.

Of course it’s good news that he’s not going to be subject to that. Have to laugh at those suggesting it’s ’poor form’ to think so. Aye, we’re all gutted for the lads themselves, but come the end of the WC, when they’re both (hopefully) fit and available, is anyone really going to regret that they didn’t go?

Apparently, temperatures in Qatar will be around 25°C during the WC. This is why it's being held now, otherwise the temperatures would be doubled.

Bit of respect to presume that I knew that already would’ve been good. Totally condescending and irrelevant point.

Any forecasts on the humidity? Or reports on the average altitude of the stadia over there?

I agree with what your saying but next season i’d like to see a new striker starting and have Kyogo and GG as backups

And when is ‘in due course’? We’re 7 months into his return from that major injury, and - apart from a decent start to the season - we haven’t seen him reach the heights he did last year yet.

I don’t think it’s a confidence thing. He was full of it at the start of the season. If anything, it might be the other way round: confidence beginning to wain because of his poor form.

I just think he’s a pretty inconsistent finisher whose incredible movement and quality link-up play sometimes masks it, tbh. All strikers go through dry patches, but his are more pronounced because he generally misses a fair few chances anyway, even when he’s bang in form.

Not quite everyone, mate. I’ve long been in that camp as well, and a fair few here are too. I like Kyogo a lot, but Giaki’s a step up as a finisher.

Id disagree with that. I like Giakoumakis as a penalty box striker, but both on the pomp, Kyogo better finishing and movement.

Hard to find that quality. Your talking about two 20+ goal a season strikers.

Movement maybe (not by too much either), but finishing definitely not better, for me; not this season at least.

All the "overperforming" sides in europe, like RB Salzburg, Cluj, Club Brugge, etc always seem to have a very good and clinical striker.

I love Kyogo and GG, but if we had Edouard or Dembele (especially Dembele) we would probably end 2nd or at least 3rd in the group.

Salzburg have a very good recruitment system, give youth game time too. They have been a high end side for a good while.

regression in players is a common thing - there is no crystal ball
players who are the top of their game for 5 years are rare as * - look at larsson, looking back now as the years whizz past he becomes even more of a legend (which is a word often batted about with ease in football).

I think for kyogo there is a lot of self-learning and adopting and culture change is massive esp coming from japan.
i think if he learns to play cute in terms of scottish football - when to play hard on a defender, when to give them a nudge etc - street smart as opposed to making a foul and feeling sorry you committed the foul - same for all the Asian players.

A few braces and run of three games with a goal can get him back on track, i still find it strange that Gia has yet to start 3 games in a row this season.

I think we are really missing out for a tough, strong, physical midfield powerhouse a ball breaker and someone who can help dictate play and offer some muscle - in europe we get too easily pushed about and offered no fight with very little tough tackles etc... look at european games we won in the past - they were often battles.

I also think JJ is gonzo in Jan, his body language and persona is a U-turn from last season, his agent is already prob lining up clubs and the world cup will be his show piece... hopefully ange is no mug and has plans to replace, he has looked half the player he was last season.

3 wins outta 3 before the break will be nice and keep a punching distance away from second place.

    Improvements:
    more shots outside the box
    better penalty conversions
    more chances from corners
    more clinical shooting

tbf i think they have eyes everywhere across the globe with a well-oiled trusted network at pinching players.
french eddie came to us the same as their striker nkunku from psg... too many agents in the game from the wrong reasons, a good scouting and recruitment side are worth their weight in gold but it is a horrible tough and lonely job with little long term benefits. I am not sure what way celtic's recruitment and scouting side is fixed these days, or if they are more heavily influenced by agents these days (Duda etc).

I am surprised that Mudryk hasnt been snapped up at 15-17 from one of the typical teams - city, arsenal, bayern etc I think he is a great direct player and one who will make a real impression on the European level over the next 5 years.

I see Doak is doing well for Liverpool, pity he never stayed at the club, fingers crossed we keep a hold of Vata.

One of the + in the CL has been the youth side pitting their wits against top class European counter-parts the afternoon before CL games which will only help with their long term progression and development.

I always enjoy the world cup and think there is 4/5 players who can be pinched who are 'under the radar' from teams not associated with success - the trick is getting in early.

For any keen readers etc here is a insightful book about football scouting... the ones who spot mc gregror at age 8, henrik larssons at some swedish local kids league at 9 etc...

The Nowhere Men: The Unknown Story of Football's True Talent Spotters - Michael Calvin - recommended book*

    Review:
As has been mentioned in a couple of reviews many football books are ghost written memoirs and are full of the usual stock phrases that footballers use. This is as far from that as it is possible to be and all the better for it. It uncovers the unfashionable, rarely talked about and job security wise, unstable world of the football scout. The meticulous research carried out by the author is clear from the start. It doesn't concentrate on the flashy world those who aren't in the know think scouting covers. It looks at the job warts and all including the many scouts who get 40p per mile as their payment. My brother in law is a scout and I've seen first hand that the scouting business isn't the staying in 5* hotels and watching a top premier league game from the posh seats whilst being wined and dined in the hospitality suite. Usually it's a long drive to a non league or reserve game, a place in an uncovered stand watching in sub zero temperature with a self bought rancid pie for company followed by a lonely journey home punctuated by calls on the mobile to your manager or agents and then writing a detailed report before you go to bed. Rewards? The most unstable employment status in football with the knowledge that should the manager leave or the c.ub needs to tighten the purse strings the first to be cut is the scout. All this is fascinatingly described in the book. It also highlights the growth in the "football manager" chairmen and owners who have played the PC game and think they can do it all from a computer screen - the analyst approach covered so wel in Michael Lewis' Moneyball. What these owners and chairmen don't realise is that good scouting and recruitment needs both and Michael Calvin vividly makes this clear. The one thing that shines through the whole book is the camaraderie that the various scouts share (even though this is sometimes guarded because it is a dog eat dog world) and how they help and support each other in tough times. It really is a superb book written by a superb writer and one of the best football books I have ever read. I HIGHLY recommend it! It made me read his earlier book following a year in the life of Millwall - another superb book.

A well experienced local scout who can watch a player time and time again, and their "gut" will tell them if they are top quality (take the story about Rocastle as a perfect example) while the science element comes from the data analysts, the new boys, the "geeks".

If im not mistaken, both have near identical goals per 90 mins this season.
Kyogo hasnt played to the levels shown last season, but even when not on form, he is still a threat. That finish vs Livi was as good as you are likely to see.

You can speak about some of his other goals as well.. cup final vs hibs, etc. Giakoumakis doesnt offer that. I do like him as well, but on his day Kyogo is levels above.

Little more than a day after his shock omission from Japan's 26-man World Cup squad, Kyogo Furuhashi was back to business for Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday.

While the 27-year-old forward was focused on his team's heavy 5-1 loss against defending champion, Real Madrid, at the Bernabeu, questions after the match naturally turned to one of the biggest surprises of Tuesday's Samurai Blue squad announcement.

Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu was widely expected to take one of the Scottish Premiership's most prolific scorers to the Nov. 20 to Dec. 18 World Cup, but fellow attacker Daizen Maeda was the only member of Celtic's Japanese contingent to get the call.

Furuhashi said he felt "nothing special" going into his first match since learning he would not be on the plane to Qatar and had avoided dwelling on the announcement.

"Like always, my mind was on the things I could do to help the team," said Furuhashi. "I wasn't especially thinking about anything, just that each game is one game, and it's important to stay focused on what's in front of you."

The former Vissel Kobe star, who has become a Celtic fan favorite since arriving at Parkhead last summer, said he had not discussed the squad announcement with Maeda, other than to briefly congratulate his teammate.

"Well, I only just saw him before the game, so I said, 'Congratulations," and he said, 'Thank you very much,' and that was about it," Furuhashi said.

Asked what more he needed to do to earn national selection after scoring consistently for his club, Furuhashi said he would simply try to continue improving as a player.

"I think all I can do is develop more and get my preparations right," he said.

Tuesday's announcement was a far happier event for first-time World Cup selection Maeda, who got the good news from his wife around 5 a.m. local time in Scotland.

"I was sleeping, but my wife set the alarm to find out," he said. "I was woken by the alarm and saw my wife with a big smile on her face."

Maeda said he feels a duty to do his best in Qatar on behalf of Furuhashi and fellow Celtic standout Reo Hatate, who also missed selection after being on the fringe of the Samurai Blue squad.

"I feel it especially with Kyogo and Reo because they are my teammates," Maeda said. "There are other people as well, but I feel like I have to represent them when I play, and I want to give my all."
