People jumped on his back due to the Legia games. I know what you are getting at but what I'm getting at is qualifying for the Champions League isn't beyond our level.

I don't think they played better than us at their own ground by the way, we could and should have had 3 or 4 that night. Same thing as usual with us this year though, we can't kill teams off.

I'm not disagreeing with you, Maribor deserve to be there instead of us. I'm getting at our own defencies.

yes, but too much of that is being pointed towards the manager. if he was scottish or a former player it wouldnt be

i think at their own ground they may have been a bit shell shocked that we werent at the races....who knows

and the same with legia, too much directed at ronny. yes some of his decisions werent questionable, but the performances on the pitch were not up to standard. possibly could have played a system the players were comfortable with to get through the qualifiers.... but despite that the players should have shown a lot more than they did across the two legs

I disagree with Scottish or former player, Neil Lennon got some amount of unneeded stick as did Gordon Strachan.

Legia was a disgrace both by the management and the players but that's why everybody had it in for him. We were outclassed.

Maribor we were better away from home, don't think it was a case of shellshocked.

I think we are a team that's good enough to reach the Champions League group stage.

I don't think we have a team that could expect any good things to happen to us there but there's a difference between the two for me.

For me a Champions League level team is Barca/Bayern/Real etc. I don't think we've ever been that outside of the late 60's early 70's.

We are * gagging on a decent playmaker, whether Commons stays or not. At 31, I think we need someone younger, faster and with the ability to play a pass in that hole for Europe.

I'd like us to try for Agim Ibraimi from Maribor. He impressed me. Rocket of a shot, dictates the play.

I don't think you have to go as far as the 3 you picked. Arsenal are a CL level team, and they aren't great by any stretch of the imagination. I would also say teams like Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk are CL level teams. We aren't at that level just now.

I tend to think of the teams that regularly compete to win the thing as Champions League level but I know what you mean as well mate, just the way my brain works :icon_mrgreen:

The last time I can genuinely remember us being at that level was under wee Strachan, and before that O'neill for us sadly it's been a big downsize since then, and it's really starting to show on the pitch

We almost got past AC Milan (who went on to win it) in the last 16 in 06/07.

The important piece of the equation is the CM role; with a complementary midfielder to Brown, capable of both holding and distribution that changes the landscape considerably allowing Johansen to play in his best position - behind the single striker and linking to the wide men. And the ability to track back and break up play. Commons cannot play that role effectively, he is more of a second striker, but falls short of all the midfielder requirements in link play and defensively. Yes, he has a great opportunistic instinct for goal, but a passenger really, as afar as team play goes.
Even against 10 men against Hearts, you could the shape of the team that Ronny has been advocating and Biton fulfilled the rear role perfectly - he was always there to link the play and even had a couple of decent attempts himself from distance. I think the team was much more cohesive and playing the formation the way it has been intended all along. I think Biton could be a really good player for us if given extended run in that role - he was really good in the second half of last season and can be again.

The Hearts line-up was close to what we need to execute Ronny's formation - you could perm in the wide options between Wakaso, Stokes, Tonev, McGregor and Forrest.

I think Commons has done an excellent job in previous seasons within SPL - but unfortunately he just doesn't really fit with the system - and speaking of 'fit', he simply doesn't have that capability to play the role with the endeavour required (as per Johansen), especially in Europe where the luxury of having him in the hope he can get a shot off, is not really vindicated against tough teams where we need 11 high-tempo players.
