At the start of the season, he went through about a month when he was our only goal threat. He hit the ground running and was looking like a class act. However, over the past month, his performnaces have nose dived. Commons appears to me that unless he is in and amongst the goals then he doesn't look a great performer.

Not only was he the only one scoring and trying things at the start of the season, his very introduction in January last season won us the title as he scored a shitload.

To be fair, he joined in the January we lost the league but I wouldn't blame it all on him :56:

    Worded incorrectly :52:

Basically what I am saying is, his stats for Celtic are incredible for a 'midfielder'.

Sounds like you are a commons happy clapper Hammer, he has been woeful for the past month apart from his assist last night, granted excellent ball to the back post.

Needs to simplify his game more, i feel he is desperate for a goal and he's taking pot shots from anywhere when he should be looking up and finding a player in a better position.

He wasn't though, he worked as hard as everyone else but his ball retention was not very good at all. He tried to shield the ball each time he got it and was robbed. His work rate in that game was exemplary but on the ball he was outclassed.

Really? I thought he was the only one who could, he broke out a lot and switched the play. Retained the ball and done excellent defensively, worked his * off.

I don't know how you don't think he done brilliant.

Commons, on form, makes the side tick. However, when off the boil (as he has been since International duty / eventual call up a while back,) he is a passenger. Our reliance on him playing well is highlighted by the fact that when he has been *, we have been * (domestically.)

Yesterday was a bit better; involved in goal 2 as well as great ball for goal 1. However, still not at his peak.

We must hope he gets there sooner rather than later. In addition, we need to procure (as per "creative" thread in this fourm) someone in January to split our reliance on one man who has shown very little consistency in performance since May 2011.

I thought he was very good but not brilliant, brilliant i would put Wanyama and Forster into that bracket, both were outstanding and better than the rest of the team imo.

Don't mistake that for me trying to downplay our achievement, be rest assured i am not one of those fans, it was a momentous achievement that left me smiling for weeks after the result.

But from my memory i thought that Wanyama was the most composed of the midfield in getting the ball and retaining it.

I am a happy clapper of no one, including players I love.

I refuse to read criticism with zero substance though. Yes he does struggle at times and is more suited to some games than others, however, his class is undeniable and he has proved time and again how good a player he is.

I thought Wanyama as amazing at winning the ball and playing the ball as well, just thought Commons was opening the play more and holding onto the ball better than others, also the shift he put in at practically right back?

I don't think you can label it a poor performance, our 4 games or so since then he has been poor, cumulating in a terrible game against Caley Thistle. However, with 7 goals this season and 8 (?) assits to his name, I don't think we can label him as a bad player for us. He is one of our best, frustrating at times when not going his way and he seems to e a confidence player but he is the something different in our side.

Think with a partnership up top to play off last night he done much better, he enjoys linking up with Hooper and Stokes. When none of them are present he gets a bit lost, along with the rest of the team.

    Well put Daver, totally agree.

If Commons could produce something near his best consistently, he would be worth a fortune but that's not the case. His inconsistency was mentioned when he first signed for us and I can understand why how. He has the quality to influence matches and does so, with some great goals, defence splitting passes and so on. It does not happen as much as I would like though.

Commons is an excellent player and had a great start to the season. However, Lennon was right, the Scotland call up was not a good thing for him. He came back injured and has looked a bit lacklustre since. That said, even when he’s not on form he is still contributing.

He’s better out on the left or as a supporting striker. I don’t think he’s as effective on the right.

I’d like to see the old Izzy and Commons double team on the left side again.

Commons is off form atm and is still having a big influence in games. Commons on form, we are sexy as * to watch. He`s just having a poor spell yet is still creating chances and spaces for other players

When did Lennon say that? Am presuming it must have been in hindsight, as before the game he was all for the call up as far as i can remember?

I heard him say something to the effect of "it didn’t do him any good" on the BBC.

Although he did say before the call up, that although Commons was worthy of a starting place in the Scotland XI, he thought rest would be a better option… also cited his wife’s pregnancy as I recall.

Either way, I think it has affected him negatively.

I do remember him saying prior to the Luxembourg friendly that he thought it was unnecessary, right enough. Just not for the double header where he seemed all for it.

I would agree re negative impact - predominantly because he was playing very well prior, played pish in the qualifiers, and has still to get back to where he was which is a crying shame as he is so crucial to us.

Although I think Commons is the sort of player who needs a run of regular games to recapture his form, not a number of broken appearances.

For example, last season, due to injury and suspension, he was only making a number of sporadic appearances. However, around March time, he became a first team regular again and had a great end to the season.

All players go through lulls in a season. He'll snap out of it. He's class, he'll be ok.
