Youre off your rocker mate, defensive shape is one of the key elements to any team and of course it's worked on in training.

If it was as simple as any of us telling the defenders what to do at professional levels then why are some coaches renowned for making their teams solid defensively and tough to defeat while others are not?

You can also get teams that are defensive in nature but still leak goals. It's not as simply as picking a formation and telling the team what to do on a board, that's football manager stuff.

Get the man a jersey. A few weeks serious training and he could be back sorting our centre-half situation.

    * * ILTC, that's utter nonsense. You can't coach senior football players how to defend better?

Like Paul said, it's like any other aspect of football. Improvements can always me made in every area.

I think he is also a good influence in terms of morale in the dressing room.

He's a world renowned name, a legend with an unbelievable pedigree. We are extremely lucky to have a guy like him about Lennoxtown every day.

He'll eventually go and get a leg up into a good managerial role because of who he is and what he's achieved.

KOLO Toure’s new job as a technical assistant at Celtic marks the third time in his career that he’s worked with Brendan Rodgers, having previously been a player at both Liverpool and Celtic under the guidance of the Irishman.

The admiration between the two is clear, and the Ivory Coast internationalist recognises that working with a manager of Brendan Rodgers’ calibre and experience will stand him in good stead going forward as a coach.

“I am at an amazing club which has a great manager like Brendan Rodgers so I know I could not be in a better place and I am very thankful for that,” Toure said. “The manager and his staff are really great guys so I'm very happy to be here with them and I want to do everything I can to help them and learn as much as I can as a coach.

“I know I can learn so much from working with Brendan Rodgers as he is a top manager. I will be working with him and his staff very closely each day so there will be a lot for me to learn.

“Brendan is one of the best young managers in the world right now. What he’s doing for Celtic is there for all to see, and he’s doing amazing right now.”

The 36-year-old has called time on his long an illustrious playing career, having become an Invincible with Celtic last season and replicating his achievement with Arsenal. And he’s delighted to be taking the next step in his career with the Celts.

"It’s a great time for me and I couldn’t be happier to be back at this club. Celtic is a great club, and to be able to come back here and work with a fantastic club and a fantastic manager is amazing.

“This is a new chapter in my career, a new beginning. The football is over now. I can officially say I am retired from playing and this is a new chapter which is coaching. I have always been in this environment and, for me, it was really important that I stay with it. I like to give advice, I like to help young players to improve themselves and get better. I don’t think there is a better place for me to be.

“For me there is no big change in terms of what I will be doing. I have always been the kind of player who tries to help those around me. Now I will try to give advice, help the young players and just guide them and pass on all the experience I have acquired during my career.”

The importance of this can't be under estimated. Confidence and feeling good help you play better.

I think Kolo's teachings can be seen in Boyata's success this season

I guarantee you if I spend a few weeks with Kolo Toure I'll be better at defending after it. That's because he would be TEACHING me through COACHING.

People are giving ILTC pelters in this thread for saying you can't teach people how to defend. But to be honest defending is instinctive, players either have it or they don't. You can't really teach someone how to mark a man as it's all in the moment and it's about making quick decisions at the time.

It's a bit different from the repetitiveness of learning how to cross, shoot or take a first touch. Those are all technical elements of the game which are easy to coach. It's incredibly difficult to teach a player to stay concentrated defensively and how to anticipate different situations. It's either ingrained in players or it's not.

Fair enough you can give advice when someone goes wrong, for example diving in when they shouldn't or when to stay tight with a man or when to stand off him. But defending is mainly instinctive and you can't really teach someone how to read a game. Decision making is something you have or don't.

You have literally just contradicted yourself.. and also saying you cant teach decision making, what the * am I actually reading..

People who say defending cant be taught are being absolute mongos, all you need to do is look at Boyata, one season people are calling for his head, next minute hes one of our best defenders - is that purely coincidence then?
