Why would a Celtic fan not want to see a Celtic player become a Celtic legend?

That * is completely beyond me.

eh? admitting their is a good chance he will leave to go to a club that can offer more than us isn't the same as not wanting him to stay, I would want celtic to win the champions league next season, doesnt mean we will

haha well its not that I dont think we could be on the same level as those clubs, but like benfica, ajax, feyenoord etc we are restricted but our current position in a small league, i dont think their is an english club except possibly man utd who we couldnt surpass

to bring it back to the point, tierney would stay at us for his career if we were in a better league, but probably not whil we are in the scottish premiership

DANNY McGRAIN didn’t think he could rate Celtic starlet Kieran Tierney any higher — until last Sunday.
Then the Parkhead legend, one of the greatest full-backs in Scottish football history, marvelled at the fact the 19-year-old effortlessly adapted to switching to right-back for Scotland.

Amid the intense pressure of a must-win World Cup qualifier at Hampden — and with coach Gordon Strachan’s job on the line — the £10million-rated Tierney looked like he’d operated in the role for years.

The outstanding left-back is being tracked by English and Euro giants and his display in the crucial 1-0 win over Slovenia, in just his third cap, enhanced his growing reputation.
McGrain, 66, knew exactly the challenge that Tierney faced — because early in his international career he too was asked to move out of his comfort zone for his country.
It made the 62-times capped idol a more accomplished player.

Now the Hoops coach and mentor figure is convinced it will do the same for the youngster.
McGrain — 657 games for Celtic and 14 major honours — told SunSport: “Willie Ormond asked me to play left-back for Scotland and there was only problem, I didn’t have a left foot!

“But I’d a job to do for my country and I did it to the best of my ability.
“I didn’t really get much notice. It wasn’t ideal. But that’s just the way it was and I got on with it.
“However, it made me want to practise with my left foot all the more. That’s what I did — for weeks I’d work on passing and controlling the ball with my left foot.
“Even working on my body shape, how I used my arm, as I kicked with my left. That was important.
“When you’re using your stronger foot you don’t think about this — it all comes naturally. But then you’re faced with your weaker foot and it can be very awkward.
“I learned to at least be comfortable using my left. It made me a better player.
“It didn’t surprise me Kieran adapted so well to Gordon Strachan asking him to play at right-back.
“I’d heard Gordon wanted to play Andy Robertson on the left. But it’s to Kieran’s big credit that the manager still wanted him in the team. That says a lot.
“Gordon must’ve seen Kieran’s confidence in training.
“The Slovenia match was a big one, there was plenty of pressure on the team and the manager. So for such faith to be shown in Kieran is a massive compliment to the boy.
“I’ve got all the time in the world for Kieran. He’s a great lad and I love the fact he’s so enthusiastic about his football. It genuinely doesn’t matter to him where he plays. Just playing is everything for the lad.
“I look at how good he is at 19, and I can’t wait to see him at 20. Kieran’s just getting better and better.
“Gordon was brave enough to pick him at right-back. If it had gone wrong, and Slovenia had scored a winner through a mistake by Kieran there, then it could’ve backfired big time.
“But the boy was brave enough to say ‘yes, I’ll play at right-back’ and he ended up playing brilliantly. I didn’t have a choice about playing at left-back. I was basically told.

“I was apprehensive because I didn’t feel I had a left foot. I had to work so hard in order to make sure I could play the role comfortably.
“There were so many afternoons I’d go back on the training ground, just repetition using the ball with my left foot.
“We also had Willie Donachie who could play at left-back. But the boss wanted me to play there for Scotland.
“Kieran was asked by Gordon and the response, clearly, was instant. That tells you all you need to know about the boy’s attitude. And let’s face it, you’re better playing than sitting up in the stand.
“Kieran’s got a big future ahead of him.”
McGrain, however, hates seeing Tierney compared with other players — including himself.
He added: “It’s not fair on the boy. People should just appreciate him for the player he is.
“Kieran doesn’t deserve the pressure of being compared to others.

“I’ve worked with him before. When I first saw Kieran play it was as a left midfielder.
“But I’ve always liked his tenacious approach.
“He wants to defend as much as attack. He’s got so many great qualities in his game.
“I’ll always be happy to help Kieran with any kind of advice he might need.
“It’s great to see him enjoy his football so much — he’s playing for a very good Celtic team and now he’s beginning to establish himself for Scotland.
“Kieran’s confidence is growing by the week.
“But he’s such a good boy that you’ll never see him getting carried away.
“Any success he gets will be earned. His attitude is fantastic.
    “Kieran’s a manager’s dream.”

Exactly. Why would elite level players want to play in Scotland.

That is probably why we've never had any before...

Why do we continually sell ourselves short?

Apart from the pay packet we are everything you could want in a football club, a fanatical support, trophies, adulation, success.

Why must we constantly look over the border and compare?

    * England.

its not the people on the forum you need to convince, its the players that choose to leave like mcgeady, hooper, wanyama, forster, van dijk, petrov, all of which went to smaller clubs than us for other factors despite being among our star players. even if we went along with your narrative this is still the case.

I know how you percieve posts like this as putting the club down but it really isnt meant that way, we have positioned ourselves as a selling club, partly out of necessity, and Portuguese clubs have done well using this model, their is certainly no shame in it

Hutton is a bit like forrest in defending can do it when he wants to but hutton liked going the other direction more, and was not in KT's class for defending either

I think the term elite can be read in different ways.

In scotland we are the elite.
In europe we are part of an elite group that has won the big cup.
in europe we are not part of the elite from the big 4/5 nations
We are part of the elite that has 60k+ seats for our fans- chelsea and most of the epl and other leagues are not part of that elite.

    etc.........................

So take your pick we are the elite/we are not

    doesn't matter its all relative.

In terms of size we are part of that top 5 or ten percent globally- also in terms of reputation.
Wideley regarded to have the best atmosphere in all of europe by all of europe.
We are unique and also similar to others.

i forgot what this thread was about :D

anyway KT top lad , top lad

We as a nation are about a tenth of the population of the big 5 nations, and it is also smaller than the other nations that have provided eurpoean cup winners like holland , portugal......etc.

We are overacheivers as a nation in general and have contributed our genius in significantly larger percentages than almost all other nations.

so our best club was always going to be pretty special.

Because, like it or not, there is a perceived pecking order when it comes to the various European leagues, based on the coefficient rankings handed out by UEFA.

Currently there is a Big Four (Spain, Germany, England and Italy), a small gap before you get to the next three (France, Russia and Portugal), and then another gap before you get to the rest (Scotland is currently ranked 23rd).

Players like to test themselves at the highest level, against the best, and currently this means a move away from Scotland. Also, for many players (though not all), there does come a time when playing football becomes a job rather than a passion, and so the opportunity to earn more money dominates their thinking.

Now I'm not saying KT is like that, I don't know him personally; but my wife worked with many Premier League clubs and the PFA for about a decade, and so I got the opportunity to meet many involved with the English game, and it is a sobering experience to have your childhood illusions of footballing glory and honour squashed, and to realise that for many it's just business.

Anyway, let's get this thread back on KT, and marvel at just how **** ing awesome the kid is, as he hopefully clinches his 2nd Premiership medal this weekend.

Are Notts Forest 'elite'? Genuine question, using your train of thought.

Elite is a silly term. We are elite in Scotland, by the definition. Around the world we are known for our atmosphere, passionate fan base and to a small extent history. Considered 'elite'? No, generally not.

    Source - living abroad.

So who decides? The clubs bias fan base? I can safely say from my experiences that very few would have us up there, as much as I try to educate on how big we actually are. We are simply nowhere near the top boys and there is no shame in that.
