Well Rangers were comfortably a better team than us at this point last year and rangers have won more trophies, so you can't fault him for saying that, stop moaning.

South African hitman Katlego Mphela today invited Neil Lennon to give him his dream move to Celtic.

He is set to jet into Glasgow this weekend, and he hopes he can do enough on his four-day trial to win a contract at Parkhead.

But Lennon is immersed in several other potential transfer deals – in and out – some of which he hopes can be concluded before the SPL season kicks off for his club at Easter Road on Sunday.

Celtic then have four friendly games – against Wolves, Inter Milan, a Republic of Ireland League Select and Swansea – before they get back into competitive action.

The signing deadline to be eligible to play in the Europa League arrives on August 8. But, Lennon wants to get the final additions he believes he needs to make to his squad in place long before then.

He has already made progress in his search for another goalkeeper with the Croatian Stipe Pletikosa and the Belgian Stijn Stijnen currently heading the list of possibles.

Both experienced men will have further talks with the club over the next few days.

Some wages could be freed up if Real Zaragoza finally take Efrain Juarez on loan, and the Spanish club hope this can be done by the weekend.

Other players who have been told they are surplus to Lennon’s requirements will also be given the opportunity to find a way out of the club.

But it is new arrivals which will be of the greatest interest to Lennon, and Mamelodi Sundowns’ striker Mphela is desperate to be the next new face through the Parkhead door.

Knowledge Musona is still banking on Hoffenheim making him an offer to move from Kaizer Chiefs.

But the deal for the 21-year-old – who appeared as a sub for Chiefs against Spurs last weekend after his trial with the Bundesliga side – has still to be concluded, and Celtic remain interested onlookers.

At 26, Mphela comes with the same £1.5million price tag, and just as big a reputation, which has brought him to the attention of Maccabi Haifa.

They have had an offer of £1.3m turned down by Sundowns, and Mphela wants his future decided quickly because he believes he is ready for the step up.

He said: “A team like Celtic are always in contention to win the league, and it would be great if I could help them do it again.”

Mphela’s agent, Glyn Binkin, confirmed a deal is possible, and said: “Mphela has the offer of a trial with Celtic. I passed the letter invitation on to Sundowns in the last 24 hours.”

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has handed a trial to Katlego Mphela with a view to sanctioning a £1.5million move for the South African striker.

Neil Lennon is hoping to win the SPL title with Celtic this season.
The 26-year-old is set to link up with the Bhoys squad at the start of next week and can't wait for the opportunity to impress Lennon.
Mphela is currently contracted to Mamelodi Sundowns and has also scored 19 goals in 40 appearances for South Africa, featuring in all three of the Bafana Bafana's games at last summer's World Cup.
He told Kickoff.com: "My intention is to go and do very well. I am confident in my abilities and believe I will do well enough to win a contract with Celtic."
The Sundowns squad is currently training in Swaziland but Mphela is still in South Africa, having recently held talks with club president Patrice Motsepe.
"Our meeting went very well and he gave me his blessing to attend the trials in Europe," added Mphela. "It's not a normal situation at Sundowns for players to be allowed to go for trials, but the club made an exception for me."

Mphela has also been linked with Maccabi Haifa and Dynamo Kiev, with the former having failed with a recent £1.3million bid.
The Bhoys can be backed at 8/11 to win this season's SPL title while main rivals Rangers are available at 11/10. Celtic open their campaign with a game against Hibernian on Sunday 24th July. They are 20/1 to win it 4-1 and 6/1 to edge it 1-0.

Manchester United have won the European Cup. Celtic have won the European Cup. Rangers have not won and never will win the European Cup.

Therefore, this statement is void :icon_mrgreen:

Want-away Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego “Killer” Mphela will fly to Scotland tonight for a five-day trial with Glasgow giants Celtic.

Mphela’s agent, Glyn Binkin, last night confirmed Sundowns had dismissed an offer from Israel’s Maccabi Haifa for the man who scored Bafana Bafana’s winner against Egypt two months ago.

He told the Discovery Sports Centre on MetroFM: “It’s been quite a documented transfer situation, but I’m delighted to say he’s got permission from Mamelodi Sundowns this afternoon.

“He’ll be flying out to Celtic tonight to take a five-day trial in Glasgow. Sundowns promised to give him a chance, I’d like to thank them for giving him this opportunity.

“Maccabi Haifa? Katlego wanted to play football at the highest level, whatever that entailed. But in consultation with the club, Sundowns decided they’d prefer to pursue to Glasgow Celtic option and we’ll take him there.”

Asked if the Celtic offer would exceed the reported £17 million made by Maccabi, Binkin said: “Maccabi made an offer and Sundowns turned it down. We respect that decision. When Mphela first played in Europe (with Strasbourg) at 17, he didn’t make it. That’s why he came back to South Africa. But now he has another opportunity.

“Sundowns wanted Mphela to stay but now, for whatever reason, they’ve let him go. I can’t speak for the club but I think it’s important for South African football that Mphela and players of his ilk go abroad.

“There’s been a lot of figures bandied about, Celtic have given Sundowns an idea of the fee they’re looking at. Now he has to prove he’s worth that amount.

“The Scottish Premier League is very tough and demanding, the big clubs are Celtic and Rangers, always at the top, always in Europe. For Mphela, it’s about competing at the top level, and we believe it’s the option which will be good for his future.”

Looking very promising and looks like he will be here to possibly watch our game this weekend

Not the type of striker I think we need, would rather a target man.

    Good player though.

Chris Sutton made 28 appearances for Chelsea and scored 1 goal, I take it you wish we'd never went for him?

This guy was only a young boy and going from South Africa to Austria would have been a massive change for him, he's 26 now and has a decent scoring rate at international level, I won't be writing him off until he's had a chance.
