He’d probably have an easier game against Sarajevo than he would in the SPL.

 

I think the point Random is making is we have Henderson who should definitely be first in line for any chances of game time cause he's comfortable out there. Isn't this the time of year we should be giving our main squad players as much time as possible?

The SPFL happens every week so it's easier to find time to put him on and he understands the game here. It's easy to understand why it would be good to see Karamoko getting a game tomorrow, we want to see him get as much valuable experience as possible and trusting players in even a qualifier could work wonders for their confidence.

Have to agree with RR though, he's only had about half an hour in the first team, it's far too soon and I'd be very surprised if Lenny played him. Not upset or worried mind. We have no idea how well he's developing in training.

I really appreciate your points there, particularly the development path and not running before walking.
My unspoken premise regarding the youngster was "if the staff think he's ready," and I could see a circumstance in an early round where all was safe to give him 10 or 20 minutes and they decided to do so. Maybe it's just the old romantic in me: the delight of watching a 16 year old slot in a goal in Europe.

Except when we just flung McGeady in against AC Milan and he * roasted them. I agree with this in the vast majority of cases but sometimes, just let loose.

 

It seems like the only argument for not playing dembele is because it's too 'big' a game to risk losing. If somehow playing him will cause us to lose

Sarajevo are one of the worst teams we’ve played in Europe. Awful conditions in a tricky environment and they offered nothing.

Anyone even thinking there’s any chance we don’t go through from this tie is at it.

Ok, I am well and truly clamped I didn't quite read it like that but I see it now. I don't think he said what he was thinking there cause obviously he's not mental and knows if we're 4 0 up (7 1 on agg) with 20 mins left I doubt we have a player in our whole system from the 7s to the seniors who could have such a dramatic impact, be an overnight infamous superstar and the board would hire Random as our next scout

 

Look at what I said: I said it's a small chance, because it is. It's not zero, though, because it almost never is (who could have foreseen us getting hammered away to Artmedia Bratislava).

However, to be fair to me, the main thrust of my argument has clearly been about our mindset and momentum going into subsequent rounds.

 

I've tried and failed to explain this by analogy. I clearly don't have the skill with words or analogies and TBH I don't necessarily think everyone is making a sincere effort to understand me anyway (though some obviously are). So I'm just going to say what I'm thinking in the exact words I'm thinking it in:

Bringing on someone as inexperienced as Dembele in a CL qualifier and actually being 7-1 up on aggregate are not independent variables.

People can disagree with this and I will listen. I may indeed be wrong about this (like most people, I am wrong quite often); but anyone claiming it is a ridiculous argument either hasn't understood what I was saying or is attacking a straw man.

I also repeat that I am in favour of giving someone already close like Henderson some time if possible, of Dembele gaining the experience of being part of the CL squad and of giving him SPL game time. Hopefully this time next year he'll be fighting for a place (like MJ) or at least not far off like Henderson.

 

Moan about giving youth a chance.

It would be amazing. Stuff like that is one of the reasons football is worth watching. If Lenny brings him on and a new star is born, I'll be very, very happy indeed to have been wrong.



Well, until we're forced to sell him next summer.

 

I won't moan. I trust Lenny. He had an excellent record of developing players in his first spell here and IMHO a very good record in CL qualifiers. I honestly think I'm right at the moment; but if Lenny does decide to bring the wee man on at some point, I will revise that opinion rather than moan.
