Karamoko Dembele is set to join Blackpool on a season-long loan from Brest before the transfer window closes.

Football Scotland understands the 20-year-old former Celtic winger is poised to undergo a medical at Bloomfield Road as he gets ready to join up with his new teammates in England's League One. Dembele has managed 16 sub appearances for Brest since he left Parkhead for Ligue 1 and he put in a cameo shift against Marseille earlier this season

He has been unable to establish himself as a starter so far but will be hoping he can do so with Blackpool for the rest of the campaign.

Dembele scored just once for the Hoopsbefore he left the club and that goal came in a home clash with St Johnstone back in May 2021. There were such high hopes for the young winger who is eligible to play for Scotland, England or the Ivory Coast.

Blackpool hope to have the deal tied up this week before they take on Wigan on Saturday. It won't be done in time for this evening's EFL Cup tie away to Wolves.

Blackpool, ooft thats a transfer to ego shock him. Shitehole of a place, stadium and club.

I think that’s why we tried to send him to Queen of the South that he refused.

I’ve heard too many stories about him thinking he’s already a superstar, if he knuckles down in a hard physical league, deals with it, in a club that’s not all glamour and realises he needs to work towards seeing him do the best with his ability he undoubtedly has.

I’ll be interested to see if he thrives, he’s either going to star there or not play at all

I thought it was Gillingham he refused, which would have been an ok loan. My guess is someone has basically said if you have a good season in this league you could probably get Championship next season. If you fail here or refuse the loan then that could be it.

I think he refused a few at the time, and told Lennon ‘he’ll be playing for a CL team next year anyway’

BY the time he was 16, Karamoko Dembele had received two of the most promising tributes a young footballer could get.

But five years later, the London-born winger has come of age off the pitch - while facing a shock to the system on it.

The ex-Celtic kid was once compared to Lionel Messi.

And respected French outlet L'Equipe regarded him as one of six "outstanding young players set to revolutionise the game".

But now his Ligue One club Brest have released him on a free transfer.

It's a surprise blow with an extra twist - because Dembele's contract was not due to run out until 2026

But he shone on loan for League One Blackpool in the domestic season just finished and is already being linked with Championship clubs.

SportBible suggest Bristol City and newly-promoted Derby are monitoring his situation.

However, it's all far removed from when Dembele stunned Celtic coaches with his sublime skills as a teenager.

Having joined the Scottish giants at the age of 10, then-manager Brendan Rodgers called him into senior-squad training three years later.

He even made his Celtic U-20 debut at the same age.

Dembele's senior debut followed at 16 in 2019.

But once his contract expired three years later, Brest swooped with a four-year deal.

However, after struggling for regular football in France, he joined Blackpool last August for 2023-24.

Seasiders' boss Neil Critchley called him "a brilliant footballer" and "exciting, something different in this league".

In his verdict to the Blackpool Gazette, Critchley added: "He's really courageous, he takes the ball into any area of the pitch and backs himself - he's got real bravery."

Now Dembele might need some of that boldness to rediscover himself - if he still dreams of reaching even half the heights his admirers predicted for him

I mean I know he did very well at Blackpool so he should have no trouble finding another club in England

When I saw the picture of his slacks and buffalo shoes, i made my mind up that I wish nothing but despair on his career. A joke of a player

Seems a strange one releasing him on a free after he's had a good season with Blackpool, you'd think they'd be able to sell or loan him out again.
