Jude Bonnar was rewarded with his Celtic top team debut by Brendan Rodgers - and his adoring family got to share his big moment.

The Hoops boss turned to the youngster with five minutes left on the clock as he hit a career milestone he will never forget as the home side hit Aberdeen for five under the lights at Parkhead. Daizen Maeda took his goal tally to 25 for the season as he started and ended the goal trail for the champions with Jota, Callum McGregor and winger Yang also getting in on the act.

Celtic academy coach Jonny Hayes - who was in the Sky Sports studio having also played for Aberdeen - was effusive in his praise of the new Bhoy and in a touching moment at full-time he raced over to the stand towards his family who mobbed him. Rodgers said: "Great for young Jude Bonnar to get his first appearance. He's working very, very hard with the second team. He's got a good profile and fits how we want to play. So that is a nice little taster for him."

On a night when Celtic beat Aberdeen 5-1 to go 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership table, Callum McGregor netted his 50th league goal for the club while Daizen Maeda scored his 25th goal of the season.

There were other notable milestones in the game – Alistair Johnston making his 100th appearance for the Hoops and Jude Bonnar making his first-team debut.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who has come through the Celtic Youth Academy, having been at the club since the age of seven, came on in the 80th minute of Tuesday night’s game to replace Man of the Match, Arne Engels.

And having been on the bench in recent game, the young Celt was delighted to step on to the pitch for his debut.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, Jude Bonnar said: “It’s hard to put into words. It’s something I’ve dreamt of since I was wee so just getting the call-up and being able to come on is just class!

“It motivates me even more, especially training with them and their quality, being able to keep up is a good confidence boost.

“They don’t stop and it makes it easier coming on because of the pace they’re playing at.

“I’m just grateful the manager’s trusted me enough to step on the pitch with the players. He just said to make sure I was focused, and then just enjoy it.

No chance, they warm up in front of me and he's close to the height of Scales and Murray who must be about 6'4 and hes taller than Yang and Bonnar.

Probably only Scales, Murray and Trusty are taller than Kenny, he might be taller than Engels.

What I noticed the few times I saw him for the colts was despite being a winger he was more an intelligent player on the balm than a dribbler, take your man on type so his future may be more inside as an attacking midfielder. He also had very decent delivery in his locker. He linked really well with Frame as an over or underlapping full back in the games I saw Bonnar in.

As others have mentioned he has a good build hopefully he can put on a bit of muscle mass and could become almost an Engles-esq player.

Like many others last night was the first I have seen of Bonnar, lots of promise but obviously to early to say if he will become a regular......however I so so so want to see some more youth come through, especially after the potential talent that has slipped away in the last couple of year.
Jota, Maeda, Kuhn all amazing and they all seem to "get" the Celtic way....but you wonder how much of that comes from McGregor or a Forrest that install the Celtic DNA on the training pitch, in the dressing room, in the huddle...... a kid like Bonnar who has been there since he was 7.....he gets it.....so lets hope he (or more like him) make it.

He looks tall and rangy, could do with a bit more meat on the bones, but he looks classy with a good range of passing.

I can see the comparisons with Engels right enough.

He looked composed and confident on the ball last night. Hopefully he can kick-on and make himself a first-team squad regular. I'd be looking to give him as much game time as possible between now and the season's end. Putting him on if we get a game won early, maybe a start or two after the league is decided.

    He won't make it bad.
I suspect he could take a sad song and make it better.

Great that Rodgers is giving debuts now season is winding down, I really hope to see more of our younger players and it helps rest our first team who have been excellent and turning in performances every few days. It was also class seeing him hugging family? after the final whistle, for a bhoy who's been with us since he was 7 it's beautiful and will inspire our other youngsters. Well done Brendan

Aye deffo looked better and more natural cutting in on to his left than an out and out lefty with Frame (games ive seen them together as well)..

I want Frame to get game time as well. Thought maybe be on the bench with the news of Taylor..

Good bit of potential. Looked mobile and cultured..
