Wasn't there some talk of a loyalty bonus?

I wouldn't be surprised if he's holding off until it activates or something like that.

Something like if Benfica just give him it up front he'll do the deal now and they get their cash. If they don't he'll just have a gentlemen's agreement with Celtic that he will complete the transfer once the bonus is activated.

Pure speculation, of course, but it's the only thing I can see holding up the deal that wouldn't be too worrying. If it's not something like that I feel it's probably personal terms between us and Jota.

I would assume the fee already agreed in the loan deal would mean they can't demand anything like this. I also think it would be a strange thing for Jota to want.

If the problem is between Celtic and Benfica then I would imagine it's us trying to go lower than the previously set clause or trying to do the payment in instalments.

Bit presumptive, don't you think? You don't think it's possible that Benfica realise they massively underpriced him, and are now trying to actively tank the deal?

My guess would be that we have an agreed price for Jota and CCV, but have not actually defined how it would be paid. Easiest way to put us under pressure is to insist on full payment, on the nose, or as near to it as you can. Even though we're a very affluent club, even we need to think hard about parting with about £12Mish right now, after already paying out for the current and last window transfers. Potential resale values don't balance account sheets, and we're not the kind of club to splurge on potential return

As long as he gives his all to the end of the season we can’t Fault him for wanting to have a crack at his boyhood club.

If we win the league I’m confident that we will buy both him and CCV

As Ange says he only wants players that 100% committed to the club.I wouldn’t question his commitment for the remainder of the season as he’s a complete professional and enjoys playing here but his heart is obviously set on making it at Benfica.

If he doesn't sign i can see him becoming our new Roberts. Loaned out to teams year after year. Ending up in teams that don't attack so can't show his abilities. May's well just stay.

Awk ffs can't say I'm not disappointed but can certainly understand him given his love for his club.

I need to stop falling in love with loan players

Just wait and see what happens. No point getting knickers in a twist over the constant paper talk surrounding Jota. See what the summer brings as I can’t see anything happening before then.

    It's still upto him.

He could still decide to stay with us. I'd rather the decision be with the player than in the hands of either club.

Once he started showing his talent again and they lose their manager, it was always going to be the case they'd want him back. Nothing major has changed, here.

I suspect this may have a bit to go yet, Jota needs to be smart rather than just going with his heart. If I was him I would be wanting to see who the new manager is first, as until that person is in how can he be guaranteed game time? That manager may not even play with wingers.

I can’t help but feel Benfica’s real ambition here is getting him back to sell for a bigger fee rather than him becoming a main player for them.

Aye theyve clearly realised they have made a balls up.

The only thing that would put doubt in my mind is him wanting to prove himself at his boyhood team, something I couldn't begrudge him.

I think in terms of a pathway to a bigger move, we are just as good an option as Benfica etc and have the same chances of european football. So for me it will come back down to proving himself in his home country.

This is the classic scenario where you don’t want a serious relationship with a girl, only to then see them with someone else looking happy and having a great time, and you are regretting your stupid move and trying to beg for her back even though when you think about it you still aren’t committed.

Well that’s what I saw a friend do :fear:

I don’t think it’s likely they’re doing it to scupper a deal. At the end of the day we have access to credit facilities if we want to spread a payment.

I can believe they want full payment and it might make the deal trickier but I don’t think it would be anywhere near enough to endanger a deal, nor do I think it would be a plan from Benfica to make more money.
