@Tim-Time 1888 whats the deal with the tax? I thought within a certain time frame if he came back it would be owed, but now outwith that timeframe?

Its not an argument its the reality.
Yea he could have doubled, trebled or quadrupled his wage in England/Europe… instead he increased it by 10 times (at least).
I never said a word about sympathy for him so you’ve lost me on that.

There would most likely be a tax bill - If I was that interested I’d look it up tbh but there will be a time limit. But its simply incorrect to state it would stop him signing for a UK club, as all he would need to do is pay it (worst case) - * he would likely get the selling or buying club to contribute to the bill if they desperate enough to get rid/buy him.

I think from his point of view, coming back here is a no-brainer. This is a terrific place to be, especially right now, and there’s a place available on that left side.

He should jump at any opportunity to come back here and get his career back on track before it fizzles out.

From our point of view, I’m not sure we’re ready to spend more money on him. Would he be as motivated this time round now that he has a career’s worth of money in his account? Not a question even he might be able to answer.

Maybe at the end of the season if we fail to find someone between now and then but I suspect it would need to be a cut price deal and Jota’s agent would need to do the heavy lifting.

When it’s a big bill due to his earnings there and there’s other options on the table that’s no an issue, like him now being in France, it comes into it IMO.

Think it’s actually the summer that it’s a non-issue, I’m sure it’s 2 years but I’m going from a half remembered conversation from someone who went to Middle East to work tax free, and moved to New Zealand, fell out with his Mrs and had to wait to get home due to the tax stuff. I’m no financial expert though, I imagine it’s not cut and dry.

Last point you’ve said there though, if a cut price deal for Jota is viable (considering he went to France for £8m) an extra £2m or something towards tax if that’s the case, that’s more than worth it for us.

If we had to get him and Tierney for a total of 8m for both then it would be the steal of the century for us

Similarly, going off half remembered reports but I'm sure it's why Jordan Henderson went to Ajax and England was a not an option despite several clubs wanting him. Of I remember rightly he would of needed to give up 50% of his earnings from his time in Saudi if he came back within 2 years.

Lennon after his stint in Cyprus when he was linked to jobs in Scotland it was said to be an issue as well.

I’m sure it’s 2 years after leaving the country and not working in it it’s not a factor. Which would be this summer, not January. Are we actually linked btw or are we just discussing in the hope we can bring him back?

Nah, no serious links, just people wanting him back more than anything.

Even if the tax thing was 100% false, he'll still get a move elsewhere quite easily, could see a lower PL club take a punt on him or a team in Germany.

Seems to be lazy paper talk. He's bombed out and we are reportedly in the market. Putting 2 and 2 together.

Would take him back tho if there was a way of making it work. He's had a poor 18 months but we know how good he is and he was the player in the squad I was most looking forward to seeing Rodgers work with when he came back.

If he is available, especially at a cut price we had better be asking the question. Might be lazy paper talk, but if they’re wanting to shift him on, it’s one we should be doing
