Middle Eastern oil states are desperately trying to diversify their economies away from reliance on oil. Building a prestigious domestic league isn't just a vanity project but designed to attract skilled personnel from the West. Likewise, there's a recognition that attracting Western workers requires creating a society liberal enough for them to tolerate.

You're not going to see a revolution in human rights because they've signed one player but it is a symptom of a broader policy of Westernisation and liberalisation that many oil states have quietly adoped.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is more common practice over last few years... I know it wouldn't be THE reason but could explain why we are seeing so many names run contracts down and go on a "free"

It makes sense to me for an agent to add this to a players contract.

Hasn't this always been a thing though? When a sale falls through the agent uses the estimated value of the sale to dictate the terms of the renewal? Actually formalizing it in writing in the contract seems like a natural progression. Seems perfectly logical in the "progression level" player pool we shop in...

 

Hope Celtic drive a hard bargain. Really in no rush to sell, the only thing at stake is Jota going in a huff if the deal doesn't go through and IMO that's worth the gamble if we can get their offer up to £30mil
