What if he doesn’t do well and ends up with an offer from the likes of Fulham or Bournemouth?

The Saudis are also clearly serious about competing with the best leagues in Europe and have essentially unlimited funds to do so to the point the English are starting to feel threatened by it. Not saying I agree with it but look at other sports there is real potential for the saudi league to become the best in the world through time if they keep chucking money at it

Have we really reached a point where arguing that not everyone is primarily motivated by money is idealism? It's just common sense. Please note that I am not denying that there are plenty of people who are primarily motivated by money (of course there are) or that everyone counts money as one of their motivations (of course they do); I'm only denying that everyone has money as their primary motivation.

A lot of people would weigh up this money against the fact that he already earns more than any one person really needs and against the things that he will have to give up. For example, although it is an exaggeration to say that this will end his career, it will likely make it more difficult to achieve his career goals. A genuine no-brainer would be something like KT's move to Arsenal, which provided both more money and the chance to develop to a higher level and to test himself against some of the best players in the world.

Some people would clearly take the money; but what is bizarre is that so many of you who would do so absolutely refuse to believe in the existence of anyone who thinks differently and accuse people who say they wouldn't of lying.

Yeah I get that , could also say he could crash his car on way to training and lose a leg, "could" covers a * of a lot of possibilities. I guess if there's any truth in the rumour it will boil down to the boys own aspirations. We will find out soon enough.

The way it’s going, a lot of the best will end up playing in Saudi.

Thanks Paul. The reason I insist on this so much is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. In any society, there are some people motivated by greed and some who aren't; the great trick the elites have pulled over the last 45 years was to convince so many of the people who aren't that everyone else is. Then a lot of people who aren't motivated by greed feel they have to get enough money to protect their kids from that. We need a reset button for our society.

That's exaggerating the point am making though. You can be not primarily motivated by money, and still get an offer so good you just couldn't turn it down.

It's idealistic to say that as long as you can live comfortably then money does not matter. Sure it doesn't need to define you if you're minted, but a happy, contented person who won the lottery for example, could do so much good with that money.

You're also not addressing the point about the Saudi league making a huge effort to improve their standing in football. It's not like it's all players going to the graveyard to see out their careers for a big payday, there are big players in their prime going there aswell. I don't think it's any more difficult to achieve his career goals there than it is in Scotland.

I very much fear you might be right about that. At this rate, it could be in as little as 2 or 3 years. But there are 2 caveats there:

    1) It's very plausible but not certain, so a gamble.

    2) Here and now it's nowhere near as good a move to develop yourself as England or Spain (or even Germany) would be and 2 or 3 years is a very big chunk of a footballer's career.

There's very few clubs outside Saudi that will offer him 192k a week.

To be frank here, he's clearly taken into account money.

    Yup, he'd be set life.
Although, in those 4 years he could have seen any ambitions for playing for his country diminish, his career could stall or nose dive playing in a obscure league. Its not all about money.

    Fingers crossed.

30% of any fee rumours are giving me the fear.

Totally agree. As I said, it'll be down to the boys aspirations as to how he sees his career path.

Tbh I think we have a 30% sell on with Frimpong as well, looks like it's becoming a lot more common.

I love coffee but I love my eyesight more. No amount of coffee in the world would convince me to give up my eyesight.
Now it is true that I love money more than coffee, but no amount of money would convince me either.
If you have a higher priority, the sheer amount of money doesn't always trump that.

But I'm not saying that money doesn't matter. I'm saying that for many people there are diminishing returns and after a certain point some other things become more important than money. I'm not saying that beyond a certain point money ceases to matter at all.

I think it is changing, yes, and perhaps in 2 years they will have one of the best leagues in the world and this conversation will be moot; but here and now the situation is such that there are still plenty of players who wouldn't choose this option.

25m to a Saudi club is seriously selling ourselves short. They have open cheque books and would pay well over the odds. We should be looking to demand something north of 30m in the likely event that we aren’t going to make anything from a potential sell on further down the line.
