I don't even know where to start with this. How are we going to replace him right now if we don't sign him? In your scenario we would still be £4m better off when it comes to replacing him, never mind what having him could have brought in along the way, than we are now.

 

It’s not just about what profit we could make when we sell him. You have to think about how much he could help make us in terms of possibly taking us further in Europe, or help us to qualify if we need to in the future, and helping us to dominate in Scotland with his ability.

All players, including ones we sell, have sell on clauses although 30% is high it's standard practice, especially when selling someone who's been through your youth system

You can always try, but what benefit to Benfica is there when they know they can sell him eslewhere for more than our buy out and still add in a sell on clause? It's the best price for him we are going to get, we either pay it or don't sign him, it's that simple.

30% of profits. If he continues to develop he'll easily go for £25M in modern market. That would mean we'd have paid £6.5M and owe Benfica ~£5.5M.

So in total, we get a * hot player for a few years, and sell him on for about £13M+ profit... Hmmmm! Let me do the math on that one and see if it's sensible?...

How the * are people getting hung up on the sell-on clause?

 

Or alternatively, just be happy with £700k for every million over £6.5M he goes for, which is likely to be between £10-20M, depending on how well we handle his contract situation
