Yes, but we must be looking to bring back Roberts or someone close to that level. Hayes is just another squad player we don't really need.

So much for reducing the first team squad then.

    Haha fair enough.

I was in no way suggesting he is/was a poor player. I've always liked him. I was merely suggesting that he was on the fringes of our team, this season he's been one of the first names on the team sheet.

Perhaps a bad choice to use as an example, but you get what I meant about players peaking at different times.

Celtic were last night believed to be closing in on a £1m move for Republic of Ireland internationalist Jonny Hayes.

The 29-year-old is believed to have been given permission to speak to Celtic, despite still having two years remaining on his Pittodrie contract.

It is understood that Aberdeen are looking for a cash sale - as well as a player in return.

It is also believed they will accept less than the figures quoted of Ryan Christie is also part of the deal. The Celtic forward spent the latter half of the season on-loan with Derek McInnes' side.

Christie has expressed a desire to stay at Aberdeen that part of the deal could hinge on how much Celtic are willing to pay him to cut his contract with them short.

There was a suggestion that Gary Mackay-Steven could also be used as leverage, although that appears unlikely. The winger is expected to go south of the border with Sheffield United reported to be among those keen on the 26-year-old.

Hayes scored against Celtic last weekend in the final of the William Hill Scottish Cup but is already well-known to Brendan Rodgers.

The Celtic manager signed Hayes for the Reading academy when he was just 16.

Hayes is part of Martin O'Neill's squad for the Republic of Ireland's friendly against Uruguay on Sunday at the Aviva stadium in Dublin.

Cardiff are also still keen on the player. The Welsh side had three bids turned down by Aberdeen in January while Birmingham manager Harry Redknapp watched Hayes in Saturday's Cup Final at Hampden.

It is believed that Hayes preference, however, is to go to Celtic to have the opportunity of working under Rodgers again.

The Hoops boss is looking for a wide player to fill the void left by Patrick Roberts, while a central defender and a midfielder are also on the agenda, preferably before the Champions League qualifiers kick off mid-July.

Could be this signing at this age is for squad cover as some at celtic are out the door and we need replacements....at 29/30 i doubt he is more than a season or two cover.

Hayes + christie on loan is actually not a terrible deal, would still prefer someone else but he'll be a good backup.

I think everyone should trust the judgement of the manager. He has yet to fail us. If he wants Jonny Hayes then he has a plan for him. I don't think for one minute he's going to sign anyone unless they're part of his plan. I still hope he brings Paddy back!

"We don't need many but if we can bring in a couple of players of quality, we want to make a mark on Europe next season," Rodgers told Talksport.

"And if we can add one or two to that with genuine quality, then it just makes the group really competitive on a daily basis, and that will improve them in the games.

"We're very much wheels in motion, looking to improve and bring more quality to the squad as opposed to numbers. That's well underway. We've got a great recruitment team and people behind the scenes working very closely with myself and Peter on that."

Its comments like this which makes me confused to why we are going for Hayes because he is going to make up the numbers. He is not good enough to be a starter for us.

Ive actually calmed down a bit and aslong as Christie isn't away the other way then fair enough, that said I still want another winger in if Roberts isn't coming back.

We will bring someone else in mate. I'm not worried about that.

Rodgers won't go into the season with 3 wingers.

Aye I think so aswell mate, I must admit I did lose it a bit yesterday over this, but Hayes stats at SPFL level are actually quite impressive, but his age and the Christie factor in the deal still annoy me, but has Brendan been wrong yet, that's why we are all posting on here and he is managing our great club. :50:

Yup mate, him bringing in Kolo last season was questioned, yet they bring in Alves and it's going for 55 all over again.

My mate actually put another slant on it for me, we bid for Aberdeens best player yet the huns take their 5th or 6th best player, yet it's spun in a negative towards us the media in this country are a * riot, no wonder the sales are plummeting fans are waking up.

Funnily enough was thinking that myself earlier.

They are taking the * about us going for Hayes when they have just signed Aberdeen's 3rd choice midfielder who does nothing against us time and time again.

With Hayes, you can at least say he has always caused us problems. Whether with ICT or with Aberdeen.
