I've already said I wouldn't want him to be first choice. As a back up, I'm happy enough with him.

Well with that fee and his age I would still be unhappy at any deal, my opinion is Aberdeen is his level, and * it let's have McGinn back as he has done well up there.

I agree that spending over £1 million on a back up is weird but he's a better player than McGinn.

McGinn never causes us problems. Hayes has scored a few against us, including 3 screamers.

@Gyp Rosetti @Mr Monaghan (Knock on wood it doesn't ever happen), but a guy like Sinclair or Onyekuru, Fischer ect. goes down for 3 months, and you have GMS to replace him (puke). Or, you have Jonny Hayes ready to come in knowing full well he is more than capable of filling that void.

Understand where your frustration regarding squad numbers and how quality>quantity is the way forward, agree 100%. However you need depth, and having Hayes in as a backup option on the wing is a great luxury to have. We rid ourselves of the majority of the deadweight, and bring in another 3-4 quality signings that signify our growth as a club, ie. Onyekuru, Caceres, holding midfielder...

I've already said I'm happy to have him as back up. I'm not disagreeing with you or Sean, think GYP is more against it than me which I can see exactly why though.

I just never seen this coming. As long as we sign someone else I don't have a problem with this, said multiple times throughout the last year that we will need 2 wingers signed this summer rather than just the 1.

I'd like to think someone else will be brought in. A Fischer, Onyekru or Roberts again.

It's more surprise with me than anything.

Given Rodgers' consistent comments about the players he will be targeting I never expected Hayes to be one. Although admittedly, like you say, we will not be able to sign £4m wingers and play them as rotation options, so the 'blue chip' players he has mentioned won't be the only ones we need to sign.

Strong back up is a necessity and this is what I'd class this as. Despite the fee we could still get 3 good years out of Hayes, at SPL level. If it comes to September and he is one of our 1st choice wingers, then I'll be annoyed. BUT, that surely won't be the case.

Just caught me off guard a bit, was convinced this was just * paper talk.

Fair enough but I am totally underwhelmed by this, i just don't get bringing him in even as back up at the price quoted, and if Christie goes the other way then that's even worse, this just doesn't fit in with what Brendan said about improving the quality as Hayes would be another squad player.

If Christie is part of this, then surely it's another year loan.

No way we'd give them cash AND what many view as one of the brightest talents in Scotland for a soon to be 30 year old Hayes. Not a chance.

I don't really want him, but getting him for £1m is a steal.

Can see us signing him and getting rid of GMS and Izzy. He's more than capable as a backup left back and it'll kill two birds with one stone.

The fact Izzy couldn't even make the bench for the final tells you how much Rodgers rates him.

See if Ronny Deila was still in charge then I would definitely be worried that Hayes was going to be a cheap replacement for Paddy Roberts, but with Brendan in charge you just know that there is no chance that will be the case.

Does Hayes play on the left?

Think we will be bringing in better than Hayes.

No chance we'd pay even close to 1m up front IMO.

Looks like it's happening one way or another now anyway.

Agreed, would rather play a kid who's actually arsed and eager to play and develop a role within the club.

Aye because personally, I don't Rodgers will sign him.

Even as a back up in the case of GMS leaving I just don't see the point in this transfer.

If we are to sign someone in that position then I would hope Rodgers would go out and try and find a first teamer, someone who could really push Forrest or Sinclair, not someone who is signed just to make up numbers and is likely to play less then 10 games a season, that spot should be given to a youth kid.

Would be happy with this signing. Very underrated in my opinion and guys like Hartley, Stark and Barry Robson signed at his age and werent half bad!!

Fair point. After everything Brendan has achieved so far, he deserves our full faith in his decisions.
