Strachan will hopefully be re-thinking his decision not to put Russell in the squad vs Estonia, if he watched that today.

Russell was good today. Wasn't impressed by GMS though.

Agree with this. Mackay Steven done very little of note today.

A few mazy runs and beating Division 3 standard defenders does not automatically mean that he is good enough for Celtic. His crossing leaves a lot to be desired.

Russell, on the other hand, has been scoring for fun all season and with the better service he would get here, could easily do a job for us.

GMS is a very tricky wide player who constantly beats defenders for fun. In that sense he is certainly comparable to McGeady. he's nothing like Chris Burke or Ross Wallace. Both GMS and Russell are very promising players. If I had to take a punt on one I'd go for GMS.

Aye, Russell could be Celtic class... we'll have to wait and see how the next transfer window changes things.

This is what I said in the other thread we have regarding both of them. Anytime I have watched Mckay-Steven he has done little to convince me that he is good enough for Celtic. He has skills yes, but his end product isn't always the best. Bit weak on the ball too. Those aspects of his game could be worked on, however I feel we would be better off going all out for Russell alone. Strong, unbelievably fast, good work ethic, can put the ball in the net, and surprisingly for a guy his size he is quite effective in the air at times.

I'm amazed that Russell hasn't been capped by the Scotland senior team yet.

Its unbelievable to me. Some utter diddies have been capped, yet he imo one of the top 10 Scottish players hasnt :54:

The worst of all is that Steven "The 2 bob Dirk Kuyt" Naismith starts every game for Scotland and Russell is basically Naismith but with pace, technique, ability and intelligence.

The Scottish national team is not my area of expertise by any means so I apologise beforehand if I am making gross generalisations but it's always been my impression that some pretty poor Rangers players have been picked ahead of decent players from other sides - and I'm not talking about Celtic here.

This was confirmed to me again today with Wallace, a poor fourth team player, in the squad and Russell isn't.

Seems like a sop or a bad habit - a Scotland squad has to, by tradition, contain at least a symbolic number of Rangers players?

Its not even that, just diddy players of all kinds get picked.

Don Cowie, Andy Webster, Darren Barr, Murray Davidson, Liam Kelly, Chris Burke, Leigh Griffiths :52:

Scotland need a manager to come in and tell it how it is publically and shame and embarass players, making it known whats required and turning Scotland into a more Footballing team.

Its embarassing to watch players like Hutton, Berra, McArthur, Naismith, Mackie and Miller never mind the above mentioned. Id want to see Scotland with footballers like Russell, Forrest, Phillips, Maloney, Fletcher, Snodgrass etc

And even if theres not really a good player for that position, like left and right-back play guys who can control and use a ball even if they are as bad as Whittaker, Fox or Dixon. Dont resort to poor footballers like Hutton, Wallace and Foster just because they run about like heedless chickens.

Everyone always raves about GMS. But I cant really remembering him doing it in a big game. It's all well and good doing fancy flicks at the halfway line against Kilmarnock in a normal SPL game, but Russell scores vital goals in big games - where GMS rarely shine. I'd take Russell everyday of the week.

I'll have to bow to your superior knowledge as I don't follow Scotland closely but aye, I've always had the impression that part of the reason Scotland punches below its weight internationally is poor team selection.

Been like that for a while now.

Why GMS though? He didn't seem great shakes today. From everything everyone's said on here I was expecting the next big thing.
