we drew with a weak Udinese at CP, although granted we shoulda won, it was a tight game, and we got a wonderful draw against them in Italy, but lets be honest, we would have lost if not for Forster, he kept us in it

Ateletico, we were beaten home and away, and deserved nothing more....Roma, Sevilla, Villareal, Newcastle, PSV and Ajax.....we'd go into all of those games underdogs, we have players with potential, we could be a really good team, but right now....we arent quite at that level

 

TBH I think that some of the stuff on this thread is over the top Ledley is nowhere near the finished article, and he has a long way to go to be anywhere near Lamberts status in the game.Granted he is improving but ffs he's not even played a full season yet and people are making him out to be some kind of midfield genius

 

hes nearly played 2 full seasons now.

 

i agree....hes a steady player, does a siple but effective job and works hard, as well as pitching in with the odd goal, very valuable player

but!....hes being overrated a bit imo

Atletico are a good team though, even both those games they werent bad beatings.

I think we should be pretty confident in our own ability.

We have played Braga at home and won, who went on and got 9 CL Group stage points and ended up UEFA Cup finalists, we have played Udinese at home and should have won even could have won away if we had been given a penalty near the end, Atletico really stole the win at Celtic Park although deserved their win away and Rennes we deserved our win and draw against them.

These teams arent mugs and we done well for a young squad with inexperience on and off the park in those kind of games. Utrecht away, Sion away and Braga away were blunders though but 2 of those were our first like 5 or 6 games.

Udinese are 3rd in Italy above Napoli who knocked out Man City and possibly Chelsea. Theyre also above Inter, Roma and Lazio.

Rennes are 6th in France, they have the same number of points as Lyon and are above Marseille who are still in the Champions League.

Atletico are 9th in Spain but only 3 points off 4th and you wouldnt bet against them getting 4th. Before losing tonight against Barca they were unbeaten in 7 League games.

Our fans are nervy when thinking about Europe given our last 2/3 years or so before this season but I think from now on we should be back to the kind of confidence we had before as we can give teams a game again and beat good teams.

Tbf mate we drew at CP against Udinese with a much depleted team ourselves and got a very harsh decision against us.

 

we still didnt win mate....we won 1 of 8 european games this season, 3 by default, but really it was 1, yes, we had some good performances, we really did, but we arent there yet, we didnt get through in the Europa league, Group of death, yeah, but, itd be a group that youd be delighted to get in the CL, we're probs gonna get a harder group than that next year, maybe MUCH harder, and we're gonna have to be better if we're to do anything next season, the best im hoping for next season is 3rd in our group

 

3rd in our Group is the best we could get unless we get lucky and draw a Porto or Lyon as 2nd seeds. It would be an achievement too as it'll be our first time there if we qualify.

I think we can give teams a game again though. 2009/2010/2011 we lost all our confidence that had been built up in Europe from 2000-2008 but I think we are back. Still learning but back to a level that we should show no fear and should atleast kid ourselves on that we can beat anyone at home. We have restored a good home record, think we have only lost 1 of 6 home ties? since Lennon took over and also 0 of 5? at home to Rangers, unless ive wiped one from memory lol

 

i think 3rd is the best we could do even with a Lyon or Porto, unless we got lucky

youre right that our home record is good recently, but still...we havent faced anyone the level of Milan or Man Utd, temas we beat in Strachans reign, so i dont think we're back completely

more competitive though, ill agree with that

player for player i would argue that this team is better and has much more potential than strachan's did so hopefully we can push on in the next few years and make some serious waves in europe. The only thing that has been lacking for us in the past few years has been the confidence on the european stage and following our performance this season i think we may have gotten our mojo back. Results in european competitions don't always make sense or go to the team with the highest payroll so hopefully if we can reach the champions league groups we can win our games at home infront of a packed parkhead and maybe nick a few draws on the road. After that you never know, we might be able to advance after all.

I think this sums up the player

 

He's not the type of beat 4 players and put one in the top corner, he does the simple things effective, simple passes and breaking up play very consistent and clearly loves the club, I would have him as the first name on the team sheet, I always feel confident when I see his name in our starting line up.

 

Simply put, he is our Ji-sung park/ Essien

 

Park only gets a game against arsenal, Man Utd etc, so that isn't true. Ledley is the first name on the team sheet (for me). Darren Fletcher of a few seasons ago would have been a better comparison
