Not really, they sold him, two teams have developed him over 5 years. Same person but not the same player they sold. He'd also count as club grown. Also remember Man United sold Pogba.

In layman terms because of ffp just looking at the transfer doesn’t make for good reading at the start making 3-4 million on a player that wasn’t gonna get in their team was good business ….. now they are spending 40-50 million because turns out he is good enough

JEREMIE FRIMPONG could find himself at the centre of a summer head-to-head between both Manchester clubs.

City and United are keen on the highly-rated Dutchman, who joined Celtic five years ago and now plays for Bundesliga front-runners Bayer Leverkusen.

But United have also made regular visits to watch him at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has shone in their march towards a first Bundesliga title.

Frimpong, 23, has a one-off £35million release clause that can only be activated this summer, despite a contract which runs until 2028.

City see him as a potential long-term successor to Kyle Walker, who name-checked the youngster on England duty last week.

Wing-back Frimpong, who spent two years at Celtic before moving to Germany in 2021, can play on either flank, and Bayer have also used him in midfield.

Frimpong spent over a decade at City's academy before his move to Celtic and the fact he would be classed as home-grown and academy-trained is another financial plus to Etihad bosses.

They are aware of their neighbours’ interest in a man who has scored 11 goals with as many assists in Leverkusen’s astonishing season.

United’s new regime sees Frimpong as having the perfect profile in terms of age and asking price.

He has scored more times than forward Marcus Rashford this season, who has scored just seven goals and provided two assists

And although Germany’s champions-elect are desperate to keep him, they will be powerless if either Manchester club triggers the release fee.

United are looking to bolster their backline next season under new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

They got around 4 odd million, haven't had to spend anything since then to train him or get him to the required level. If they dont buy him the same money just goes elsewhere and we wouldn't bat an eyelid.

The buy out cause is bad for us. He would be going for more than £35m upping our cut of the fee.

Leverkusen have also shot themselves in the foot if they have set £35m as the release clause.

On the one hand that is the case but on the other it probably makes it more likely he is sold this summer. It’s still about £7m or so we get for a player who doesn’t play for us anymore.

From the players perspective he would be better going to a team that play with wing backs and not a flat four. He’s still not great defensively. The other option would be if the team had a very solid left back who would stay back to let Frimpong bomb on.

A team that plays with wing backs and a team that is not called Man Utd. Better and more experienced players than Frimpong would look hopeless there

It has been banded about a few times now. I think it was Fabrizio Romano that started it.
