It was actually a masterclass from him if you watch it back, I never knew he was that intelligent a player. Everytime someone came up against him he positioned himself offering them the chance to run in on their weaker side which they never really done, forced them just to pass the ball backwards or the odd time they tried to cut in on their good foot he took the ball off them as he was waiting on it.

Totally. I've also been saying that we need some height and physicality in our team so that we can compete

Big problem we're likely to face is that he's really putting himself in the shop window, front and centre, so far... Last night I didn't even think he looked slow; which is saying something with the level of the opponents. This means we can definitely expect competition to sign him and we've very little leverage on reducing his wages, which if I read correctly are gonna be way beyond us, even for a free transfer - think I read £90kpw (£4.5M per year).

No way we can pay that, even with the CL money, so we need him to move to us; unless DD does one of his wonder donations... I just can't see us paying more than about £50kpw at the extreme edge, and £60kpw would represent a cultural shift from the board - that dropping £6M in wages over 2 years versus about £3M in wages and about £3-5M on the transfer, when the caveat is a zero return at the end of it from a transfer on

It's not even that he'd only be competing with KT, but that we might also play him in front of him as a DM or sweeper type figure if we need to bolster the defensive side of a match... The way he held of players coupled with his reading of the game and getting into the right places early was brilliant! And he's still not even at full fitness/sharpness...

Looking like he could be the absolute perfect option to rotate with KT and also cover for multiple other areas. Vast experience in the PL, big physical boy with decent pace. What a bit of business if we can bag him in the summer.

It certainly would be incredible especially given his versatility as well as obviously being able to rotate with Tierney. The only way it happens though is if he agrees a pretty sizable pay cut as there is no way we can compete with the king of wages he is probably going to be offered by a few other epl clubs next summer.

Aye wages will always be the sticking point. If he's the type of guy that rejects the chance to play here with all that comes with it, especially at his stage of career, then I'd not be fussed about bringing him in.

32 years old, already make mega bucks in England, and has the opportunity to end his career winning trophies and playing in the CL....he should be jumping at it. That's the attitude I want in the squad.

Pity we didn’t sign him 3 or 4 seasons ago.

Shows us what we've been missing. Bayern realised quickly that they couldn't take his lunch money like they did with Taylor.

Our wage structure should be flexible common sense great player at end of career without upsetting general wage structure, upsetting other players on long term contract - needs a bit of flexibility. He is exactly what we need - we could spend massive money on transfer fee and end up with absolute dud!

Sounds fair mate, until you realise you're asking a man to voluntarily say "* it!" to about £1.5-2.5M per year for the privilege of playing at a lesser domestic level for the chances of a few big games a year...

Seriously, I never complain too much about people moving to the bigger wages, so I wouldn't flip passive aggressive dirt at a player not dropping it either... I know nothing about his family, wealth or personal requirements but we've no right to expect any working person to voluntarily drop their working terms and conditions for our benefit...

I hope a deal can be sorted, in whatever way we can meet each other, but it's a big ask and I wouldn't blame anyone if it doesn't come off...

I honestly think it’s just a sign of how well drilled and coached players are down the road.

We slag the league for how highly they think of themselves and of course some players come up here and can’t handle it. But if they have the physical attributes and come up with the right mindset, they can be a massive success.

    Schlupp obviously has that.

Won't be able to give him £60K a week however we can instead give him a significant signing on fee and then perhaps a basic £25K weekly wage after that

It's based on nothing but my gut and vague understanding, but I reckon about £500k-£1M signing on with a respective £50kpw or £40kpw would be doable, given the absence of a transfer fee, and that I understand that we BONUS our players quite well.

By my * packet maths that's about £5.5M over 2 years, plus bonuses, which is steep for no return, but not out with our budget, or some of the bad transfers we've made along the way...

It would be a mindset change from the club, and could run foul of FFP, but for a quality utility player it's not a bad investment over 2 years... At the end of that we might even taper the wages down again, like we did with Broonie and sign him again for a 3rd year at about the normal high-end £30k...

There's no way that wherever he plays next season, that he'll be getting anywhere close to £60k per week.

Ideal scenario would be that he fancies moving in to coaching at the end of his career and we can offer the support and structure to help him.

A championship or bottom of the table EPL team would match that wage and a bigger signing fee without blinking, it'll 100% be down to what he wants out of the next few years of his career, if we make him an offer and he decides to stay here it'll have to be about more than just money.

He's only 32. Balogun is arguably the Huns quickest and most defender still and he's 36.

I'd definitely sign him on a 2 or 3 year deal. He isn't some sort of decrepit, slow 32 year old. He's a unit.

Oh, I know, but I reckon that's about as far as our board will currently go, and it may be enough to get him to move... As you and others keep saying, we need him to want the move for it to have any chance, and then we need to get out of our comfort zone to fund it, otherwise it's dead before it begins because as you say there's plenty out there who can blow us out of the water in an instant without even flinching

Maybe it's 'anyone but Taylor' LB effect that the frankly average Valle benefitted from here, but whilst I thought Schlupp was very good v Bayern, the hype here is a bit much.

He had a very slow start to game and vast majority of Bayern threat came down his side, including the goal via the admittedly excellent Olise. It was about 50/50 between them.
He did some great work too, was clever and his physicality is excellent.
Improved defensively when Maeda moved over to left also - as most would.
Promising performance and a very good pro, but lots more to do yet to justify a big wage deal.
