Quote for next Thursdays presser after window closes...

"we tried but couldn't quite get it over the line, we couldn't get the right quality into the squad therefore it was decided that despite the work that went in we go with what we have and we look again right at the beginning of the summer, its a tight turnaround for the CL but its an important window and it is easier to deal with teams, but we go with what we have these players have won 4 out of 4 trophies, the summer will be an important window, we didn't lose any of our main players and added some experience with Compper"

:50: or words to that effect.

@Marty McFly will use the delorian to confirm shortly :56:

Although we have a healthy lead in the League a probably insurmountable lead by all accounts..

The performance levels v Hearts, Hun & Thistle show that an injection of quality is needed domestically, never mind in Europe.

No disrespect to Thistle but I'm glad we don't need to go to Edinburgh or The Hun in the Cup. While I'm confident we can beat anyone domestically, it's clear we aren't firing on all cylinders. A wee lift is needed by bringing in some quality.

    Not to mention Zenit.

Exactly. Especially if they expect EPL level wages from us.

I'm worried we might be focusing too much around what is happening in England.

I know Rodgers knows the market well but hope we are still spreading the net far and wide and not waiting to see who is left out down South..

    This ^

I said this earlier in the the thread, BR and Congerton's expertise and connections is based around the EPL market, a market we can't compete in, apart from loans.

We have Scouts all over Europe but those making decisions on players are very much from an EPL background.

We need to look to Holland, Belgium etc.

Frustrating as * this January as per usual. I actually have a lot of sympathy for the club though. I'm sure they are trying to get players in but it's a thankless task when half the teams in the English Championship can blow us away for wages nevermind transfer fee's.

Even if we identify targets to improve the team we still need to convince them that playing each week for us and missing out on possibly tens of thousands of pounds each week will be of benefit to them in the long run for thier development.

We do have the advantage of beng able to point at players like Wanyama and Van Djik to say' look, come here and if you really are good enough for that big move in the future the club won't stand in your way' but how many players are realistically gonna do that instead of going for the immediate cashgrab down south? So much dross down there picking up well over what our top earners get and they guys wouldn't get a look at our first team.

The Balkans as well. Congerton surely has contacts there from his time in Germany they often exploit that area. Austria, Switzerland and Poland too.

Dembele staying will be the positive spin to detract from the lack of transfer activity..

Don't get me wrong I'd be delighted if he stayed but can defo predict how its going to pan out if we don't add.

Despite Brendan's level of familiarity with EPL players, I think we need to be looking in completely different markets to be fair. The bloated wage structure in England doesn't suit Celtic's transfer ambitions at all unless it's an outlier signing like Dembele or Sinclair- who were undiscovered talent and damaged goods, respectively. Think the markets of Eastern Europe and Italy suit us a lot better, though if we don't have the networks there it's a moot point I suppose..

Dembele was hardly an undiscovered talent. Spurs nearly signed him before us and he'd be their player just now, if not for him failing a medical.

Right but he was relatively undiscovered in that we were able to secure him for a 500k fee. I don't think any pundits or analysts would've predicted he would now be linked with 20 million pound moves.
