As in, Rodgers only rates 5 of them?

I thought people posting John James stuff in the Huns thread was bad enough.

But now hes made his way into Celtic Chat.

Anyone who takes anything he says seriously needs their mental health checked.

Not sure what too expect probably not much activity even though we could do with a few to inject some freshness

No matter how we dress it up there is no logic whatsoever in paying upwards of £6/7m for players to play in the spl when we are always going to have restrictions on how much we can sell a player for. Also need to remember that when you spend this money on a player, they often ask for substantial wages which can have a knock on effect on the rest of the squads when contracts are up for renewal. What happens when we move to negotiate new deals and we have another 4/5 players asking for a couple of grand extra each week? These things can add up massively over a short space of time.

I think a more realistic prospect is that we get a couple of permanent signings and maybe a high quality loan (with option to buy included) in this window and then try to tie up a couple of pre-contracts to start to lay the foundations for next season.

Although we all agree that some fresh blood is needed in the team, it’s a bit drastic to suggest an overhaul is required when we are sitting 8 points clear and on course for back-to-back trebles.

Surely with Rodgers saying there is going to be a revolving door policy in January. We can expect new players in!

If we take this attitude we won't progress.

I'm not expecting five £8-10m players or anything, but two or three around the level of Ntcham, brought in for upwards of £4m-5m is what is needed.

We need some quality. We may well be comfortable as it stands at the top of the league but our performance have been drab for a while, and too many are living off of last seasons exploits. There are certainly some big improvements to be made and a bigger stamp from Rodgers to be had.

My post was aimed at those who have said previously we should bring in 5/6 players this window when in all honesty I think this would risk disrupting what has been a hugely successful group of players for us. Not to mention the fact that there is no requirement whatsoever for such a large turnover mid-season.

The club does however need to be run as a business first and foremost. There is no logic in simply spending money for the sake of it when we can already accomplish our main goals without over stretching ourselves financially.

Interview below with David Moss gives a good insight into our recruitment model. By the look of things we always scout thoroughly and then analyse the best option. With so much homework going into each signing I wouldn’t think there is much chance of us being particularly busy this month.

Homework done over many months by Congerton and then Brendan.

In transfers you don’t just suddenly decide to sign a player we probably knew about Compper for a few months asked maybe few weeks before we signed about his availability and then bang he was here, it isn’t like FM or Career mode in fifa we will have scoured our targets for a while and this month we will act

We need 4 players of the quality of Ntcham, Sinclair et al.

Now the 4 positions that we should be looking at this month for me are

    Centre Back
    Creative Mid
    Winger
    Striker

Goalie can wait til summer for me.

Now to get the players in for the positions I mentioned some will need to be moved on

    Centre back - Sviatchenko
    Creative mid - Armstrong
    Striker - Dembele
Winger - no one as we have 2 out long term.

Now if it is those 3 who move you are looking at £30m plus for them add that to the Van Dijk cash then that’s close to £40m you have now half at a minimum should be reinvested in those 4 positions, see how the season pans out and take stock of who is out of contract in 2019 this summer and if there is a few who won’t/can’t be here then move them on but always build on strength, something this celtic board have failed to do since 2003!!!

Kouassi going out on loan for rest of season as he plays the brownie role and won’t get game time this season as brownie is too much on form to drop according to Brendan in the scum newspaper

I think before rodgers we had a budget of 4 to 5 million budget a season on transfers and anything extra would come from player sales that David moss interveiw confirms it for me what I have noticed is rodgers is quite confident in his judgment and willing as we have seen with sinclair and ntcham to spend that money on a single player and I think we will send this more as well as the odd bargain or bosman as in the past we seen managers or the board reluctant to part with that cash on one player and spread it out the only exception being scott brown ten years ago under strachan

Meanwhile, Rodgers has again reiterated that he expects to come out of the January transfer window stronger than when he went into it.

The Parkhead side have added 32-year-old defender Marvin Compper to the ranks but further additions are anticipated to follow.

“January is an important window,” said the Celtic manager. “Some players may move on but from my experience here, it’s a window to prepare.

“It’s a World Cup season so if you are looking to prepare for the Champions League, the six months run in gives you an opportunity to do that.

“It’s about whether the right players are available but we definitely want to strengthen.

“One or two might move on, in terms of players who need games.

“But I’d anticipate us to be stronger in January.”

While the Champions League qualifiers will begin to loom large in the consciousness of Celtic, who will face four qualifying ties in their challenge to reach the group stages this summer, players will also be brought in to bolster the squad for the latter half of the campaign.

Compper is ineligible for the Europa League tie against Zenit St Petersburg but ultimately Rodgers is looking to the bigger picture.

“It depends on what your needs are,” he explained. “If there’s a need for a central defender in January then you try to get one.

“If it’s with a view to bedding them in and getting them ready for your biggest games, then it’s preparatory.

“There might be a short term need or a player you need to develop, so it’s a bit of both.”
