You don't really have a say in the matter, you pick up your accent from who you speak to. I've still got a relatively strong accent despite not having lived in Scotland since I was 6. I picked it up from my parents because they are among the few people who I speak in english to. If I had moved to another english speaking country I would have lost it.
Funny thing is, as I picked up my accent from my parents, there are things that don't correspond with my age, for example: I pronounce "thing" and "think" as 'hing and 'hink; while as most people my age seem to pronunce them as "fing" and "fink".

I've got quite a strong Glasgwegian accent and I was born and bred in London, never lived in Scotland

Then I've got my day to day cockney accent and people always say they can't believe how naturally I switch from one to the other. Will be my missus talking English to each other and my family in the house and I'll swap it back and forth in the same conversation..

I don't force thing's like Glesga though. It's no natural to me and maybe some other wee one's here or there..
