It was the only place you were allowed to express . . . a sort of an Irish identity. You were allowed to go see Celtic matches and express your Irish identity . . . it’s maybe a lot more important, it’s not just the football club of course, it’s a lot more. Celtic is all about attitude and that as well. You know you can express an Irish identity and there’s safety at Celtic Park, whereas you wouldn’t be able to express it outside

    [of the Celtic environment].

They play a central part, they should do and they should continue to do. When
Irish emigrants’ children had nothing, the only thing they had to anchor themselves here was Celtic. Why should they apologise for that and why should Celtic? That gave them something to anchor their identity to.
. . . You can’t just turn around and say you can’t have that any more.

The above reasons are justification if ever needed for the flying of or the number of Irish flags. The lack of Scotland flags is not an issue and most importantly Celtic represent Scotland ( when the Champions league or Europa League draws are made, the abbreviation SCO or the Scotland flag is next to Celtics name) when in Europe or when we travel abroad, everyone knows this.

Fair play if you want to fly a scotland flag then do so, but often this is a poor excuse used by many and one with a certain amount of jealousy or even blatant bigotry by others for example:
Celtic is a Scottish club playing in Scotland and whilst their heritage should be
acknowledged, this over emphasis on Irishness is at best an embarrassment and at worst an excuse for bigotry and violence.
Celtic, a Scottish team whether some of their fans are willing to admit it or
    not
. . . Celtic ARE Scottish so they belong to more than the supporters who follow them week in, week out. . . . This is Scotland against Portugal . . . right now Celtic, albeit unwittingly, are flying our flag . . .12

I was absolutely appalled and disgusted when watching the UEFA Cup Final. I am sure I am not the only non-Celtic supporter who was urged to ‘get behind’ the Scottish team. How many Scottish flags were in the stadium? I counted one but maybe I couldn’t see the others due to the sea of Irish Republican flags on display. Isn’t it about time that people like this decided which nationality they are?

The Daily Star, letters, 26 May 2003.

I could have sworn the UEFA Cup Final in Seville was between teams from Scotland and Portugal, but judging by the flags in the stadium I think it was actually Ireland against Portugal; there were more American, Canadian, or Australian flags than Scottish. How do you expect neutral football fans to support their Scottish team when the fans make it very clear that they have no loyalty to Scotland and where their true allegiance lies? I can’t imagine what the rest of the world thought as they watched this disgraceful sight which was attended by some of our politicians who supposedly abhor this type of behaviour. This was not a good reflection on our culture and a bad night for Scottish sport.

I'd honestly be surprised if many Scots were flying the tricolours, I always assumed when I was at Parkhead the tricolours were getting flown by folks from Ireland travelling over to watch the team.
We all know the Irish love showing everyone their Irish and fair does to them - but I don't feel bad about it like the Sun writers (if you can call them writers), I just look at Jock Stein and the Celtic team that day we imprinted ourselves in European football history to be reminded its a Scottish team, with a Scottish Catholic background, there is an element of Irishness to it, which is fine.

Plus, Aldo, no one is trying to say we shouldn't fly tricolours - I believe the OP was about flying MORE Saltires, not trying to ban the tricolours. So people telling him to * off and that he is full of * obviously need to re-read.

I'm so sick of this * flag debate. If you want to take a saltire to the Celtic games then go do it.

Personally, I like the tri-colour and the Irishness of my club. It makes us unique and keeps us in touch with our roots. Certainly I like it because in a country like this, it is somewhere I can go and celebrate/feel my Irishness.

Whenever we are in Europe and in the papers every day, we are considered Scottish. There is no confusion from other countries. If you watch Liverpool and Man Utd, there are a good few tri-colours.

I don't know if I'm wrong in thinking this, but Celtic is as much a club for the Irish/Irish descended/native Scots over here as the Irish in Ireland.

Na, plenty of Scots flying it. It's an Irish Catholic background as most of the fanbase is derived from that.

This Irish Catholic thing is nonsense. Your either catholic or not catholic, nothing to do with the nation of Ireland. The majority of Catholics in Scotland come from the Highland Clearances, not Ireland. I certainly wouldn't understand a Scotsman flying a tricolour, but each to their own I suppose - I guess it has a lot to do with cultural cringe.

WHy would someone flying a saltire irritate you? It doesn't irritate me when I see a tricolour, but I'd like the option of flying a Saltire if I wanted without being harrassed by a 8th generation Scotsmans with an affinity for Irish culture. Nothing wrong with a Irishman flying the colours, and nothing wrong with a Scotsman flying the saltire. Double standards or what, we are supposed to be a tolerant club.
Also, no one has said in this thread so far they have a problem with the Irish flag, just that'd they'd like to see more Saltires. :87:

We see lots of different flags flown at football matches across Europe but only does the Irish tricolour provoke this kind of debate in Scotland. Nobody seems to tell Rangers fans to go live in England or Northern Ireland, do they?

Anyway who cares I'll fly whatever * flag I want and if anyone doesn't like it, * them.

It was at least nice to see a giant Red Hand of Ireland flag in with the Celtic support. It's about time we started taking back the red hand. I've always said that!

If it was not for the Irish connection Celtic may not even exist, and most definetely would not have the huge world wide support it has today.

If it's irrelevant, why fly any flag? It's not irrelevant at all, I live in a city where it is very relevant.

Do what you want fs,take it to the games if you want,no need to try and make people who are proud of the Irish heritage seem silly for celebrating it.It's only in this country are made to feel that way.Never any problems with Italian immigrants here or Irish immigrants in places like America doing so,it's only in this bigotted little country with an ingrained dislike for Irishness that people have a problem with it.

Mate where in this thread has anyone tried to make anyone feel stupid for being Irish or flying a tricolour? Don't give a freudian slip. I DO have a problem with people telling this guy to * off and that he is * just for wanting more saltires. Also, if you think there wasn't any problems with Irish and Italian immigrants in America you seriously need to read you history, especially if you yourself consider yourself Irish. All Catholic immigrants, whether it be Highlanders, Italians or Irish got jip in the States for being Catholic.

Aggressively defending Irishness and tricolours and condemning Saltires or Scottishness is no different than THEM.

The early Irish immigrants to the state were treated with disdain and loathing anti Irish and anti catholic riots were the norm in Many American cites wright across the eastern states lynching and riots virtual pogroms the catholics and imp articular the Irish were seen as the enemy withing gangs of new york the movie was partly based on that history of hate

    Comical thread.

From a saltire to bigotry to politics to square goes. Lol. Starting to act like the manky mob.

Also, if you lot that sit here and spout * actually went to games you'd see green and white/white and green saltires from the GB and other groups and supporters. I agree maybe their could be more especially in Europe but as someone once told me, "Bring your own?"

Celtics colours are green white and gold.

The Irish flag is green white and orange.

Very similar would you not think.

When we go abroad to represent our country we have the green white and orange and the green white and gold.

I could be wrong here but this is my opinion.

Surly this is not too confusing for a foreign team to understand. When we watched the PSV game the other night at Ibrox I didn’t see many Dutch flags.

It doesn’t stick in my head that many of the teams that come to Parkhead showing off have their national flag. Normally they have the colours of their team. Milan would have all their colours being red and black with Inter will have the blue and black.

I would say that it would only be England that does this for away game; the Union Jack comes out along side the St George.

So overall, I think wanting everyone to come along with Scotland flags is a bit unrealistic.

I’m a massif Scotland fan to which I am very proud to let people know, yet I wouldn’t look to bring along my saltire or St Andrews flag when I go to watch the Celtic.

    Well Said.

We as a club are proud of our roots and we continue to fly the flag even though a large amount of people in Scotland are against it, it has always been this way and won't change.
