Prods spoke different to us catholics in Belfast. There is still local variations and somebody could live 5 minutes away and sound slightly different.

My granny loved to use all the Aul sayings. Scullery was standard in 70s and 80s. Guttees for trainers. Go out and play with yer Chums. My granny also called the floor and door, the flure and dure. So many different ones.
Also used to say “Get to Hells Gates” for more or less saying, * away off.

My da always says ''away and * up a stick!'' or sometimes he'd just shorten it too ''away and *!''
Some others which he'd say to me personally ''stop acting the goat'' ''wise up'' ''the rarings not seen the best of you yet'' that last one I think I understand but its cryptic.

It is strange some of the different words used in different areas.

Like u were saying 'gutties' for trainers. They say that here aswell. But if u went south from Belfast a bit they start getting called 'runners'.

Everyone in Dublin certainly calls them runners

It's used as far North as Caithness where the items to be acquired are written on a 'liney'.

I have never been as far North as caithness. I've not been past Inverness. It surprised me the first time I was there cause the road signs in Inverness said "Thurso 110 miles".
Mad to think there is all that country lying even further North and I've never been to it.

I'd love to visit Orkney and Shetland too. But so far not had the chance

There was actually a question on The Chase a couple of years ago: "In Scotland, what would you be doing if you were getting your messages." The contestant opted for 'checking your email'.

I always took it as a slang way of saying “* mind you”, where mind means remember.

So more fully it would mean, “* will take note and remember you for that”

But mend as in ‘fix’ is probably more accurate.

Lands in the same category as....

    "away and bile yer heid!!"

Inviting you to go and boil your own head if you are suspected of not being entirely truthful

I grew up across the road from Paradise, and I saw that regularly. Not from a high rise but from the tap dancer in a three storey tenament.
Did any one call the tap floor in a 4 or 3 storey tenament "tap dancer?" It was a common saying in Parkhead

Do yourself a favour and plan a visit

I was fortunate enough to do the NC500
And north west Scotland especially blew my mind.

I wish I done it years ago
