Legia Warsaw lose their battle with UEFA as final appeal for compensation is denied

POLISH champions Legia Warsaw have lost their war with UEFA after the Court of Arbitration for Sport threw out their final bid for compensation following their shambolic Champions League exit.
Legia have been locked in a fight with the European game's governing body since fielding an ineligible player in their 6-1 Champions League qualifying win over Celtic last July.
UEFA punished the Poles by scrubbing the result in the second leg and awarding the Scottish Champions a 3-0 victory that saw Celtic go through on away goals.
The decision enraged Legia who first sent a begging letter to Celtic, pleading for them to "settle this matter honourably"- in a winner takes all play off match, before embarking on a series of appeals to UEFA.
A central plank of their argument was that the ineligible player, the banned Bartosz Bereszynski, had only played in the closing minutes of the second leg when the result was beyond all doubt and that UEFA's punishment was 'excessive'.

However CAS have this morning thrown out their bid for 1,854,385 Euros in compensation, ruling that the club broke UEFA rules that clearly state that suspended players must be registered for matches in order to serve their ban.
"The CAS panel found that UEFA’s requirement that only listed players can serve pending suspensions did not constitute excessive formalism and that it was compulsory for the club to list the player in order for him to serve his suspension," read an official statement.
"The panel further found that Legia Warszawa’s violation of this requirement constituted a disciplinary infringement justifying the imposition of a disciplinary sanction, and that UEFA’s decision to declare the Club’s match against Celtic FC to be lost by forfeit was not disproportionate.
"In view of the foregoing, the Panel found that it was not necessary to address the claim for compensation."
This is the second time that Legia have lost at the Swiss-based sporting judicial body and last August CAS threw out their request to be reinstated in the play-off round.
Celtic remained in the competition but went on to fall at that hurdle, losing to Maribor. The Scottish champions then narrowly avoided what would have been an acrimonious second encounter with the Poles in the UEFA Europa League.
Legia, who currently lead the Polish league, have made no immediate response to this latest CAS decision.
