The modern day LB & RB, are sometimes more competent going forward than they are defensively mate.

The way i see it is ,i want a LB that can defend firstly and most importantly ,if the LB can attack aswell as doing his main job thats a bonus.

I agree, I'd prefer a LB who was completely defence minded and play Kamara (if he's here next season) or McGeady left midfield. That way Kamara or McGeady have to do less definsively and the LB can just play simple balls up the wing, or into the central area - they don't need to be doing a wingers job.

Traditionally Celtic are a team that plays with attacking full-backs. For much of their history they've done that. Attacking full-backs fit in with the whole Celtic ethos of playing the game. They probably fit in with Tony Mowbray's ethos too. I really do think though that for the short term we have to just look at getting a no frills defensively sound full-back in until such time as our defence looks solid again.

It seems most of us are on the same wavelength here. Please read this thread Tony.

    Here the whole time
we have lost far too many goals from crosses that could have been cut out at source and from full backs not tucking into their back posts when play is on the opposite side so defensively solid for me,defenders should defend first and foremost.

So go for a full-back who's * at getting forward, so he can end up doing the centre-backs' job for them? Why not just get the centre-back pairing right - too obvious a strategy? :icon_mrgreen:

In respect of attacking full-backs, the Celtic Way has proved prophetic, and has become the standard in modern football. I don't want to see Celtic going back to the 1950s.

At very least we need someone like Hinkel, who is decent at both. If the player is no good going forward then play him at centre-back - or don't buy him.

I don't want to see us playing what would effectively be 4 CB's across the back-line.

Thats what Rangers did when Smith came back. Boring, boring, boring.

Perhaps my earlier post about Lee Wallace's defensive abilities was a bit hasty. He played most of today's Edinburgh derby at centre-half and defended quite capably.

    Interesting.......

However, it works. Defense wins championships. Besides, our midfield players are good enough to do the job without the need for full-backs to help them.

i'd take taye taiwo from marseille if we had half a chance at him. think we might have lost out though when we were linked with him before we got naylor for a couple of million. pretty sure he'd cost too much these days unfortunately.
