Michael doesn't want all politics out of football. Only Irish politics.

My problem with you is your selective opinion on politics depending on where it originates from.

    You already knew that though.

For the EPL it would need to be at least 120K.

However, I'd be happy to go to Barca for 60K. :50:

The idea of being a good player and staying at celtic and becoming a proper part of the clubs history under the current set up I wouldn't cash in for any realistic wage

I firmly believe that if someone paid me £60,000 a week I would be dead in a year. Most probably in some hotel room with an equally overdosed hooker right beside me.

    So I'd stay at Celtic.

The thing that would put me off staying at Celtic my whole career would be staying in Scotland.

I'd want to go somewhere warm like Barcelona to sample the cuisine and women!

An established first team star, so I'm going to work on the assumption I'm 24-27ish & maybe on 10k a week already. I don't think thats too much of a stretch for the scenario. I also don't think its too much of a stretch to say that the current established players probably vary from high teens to 30k a week? Or at least late 20's.

I've thought about this many, many times. My view on it has never really changed, I'd stay. Obviously as the original question implies I'd use the offer to look for more money. I'd look for 35 but be happy 20. Although if the board take the approach with me that Leeds allegedly did with Seth Johnson I'd come out of negotiations a very happy & wealthy man.

I'd want to play. Playing football is surely the point, to warm a bench or sign for a big team only to be farmed out on loan after spending 6 months unable to break into the team wouldn't interest me. The chance to realistically win up to three trophies a season plus play in Europe every year is a no brainer. I understand I have my green & white tinted glasses on but I do think that would be enough for me. Especially the yearly participation in Europe.

I knew a good few lads who at one time or another went to the UK to sign for clubs. Only one could you say really made it, he's retired now. I remember chatting to him once on a stags in Madrid. He was always guarded about wages but it was just the two of us at the end of a night having a chat. He was playing in the premier league at that stage & was on 30k. This was summer 2008. He played about 6 years in the Premier league & I believe 30 was the max he ever got. His outgoings were astonishing. Theres a whole footballer lifestyle that us ordinary plebs rarely see.
He rented an apartment in two cities after transfers rather than buy outright. He'd been at a club from 14 & moved from them early 20's & came back there to settle down when he retired. He's always owned property there tho. He built a house, a great big * mansion, for himself just outside of that city & lives there now. He definitely had his head screwed on financially but he looked after his family & his 'people' very well. By that I mean agents & stuff. He was very close with his agent, always surprises me how close players can become with them considering the reputation they get. Haven't spoken to him in a few years but he still lives there & does coaching work. No idea how financially sound he actually is by all accounts he's doing ok. Point being - a 15 year career where you peak at 30k a week for 4 or 5 of them should be more than enough to set you up.

Just another point that annoys me which was made in the thread earlier. The whole 'a footballer only has a short career' thing. As if this in some way justifies the obscene amount of money they get. Bollox, the free time these * have to improve themselves academically or otherwise during their career makes this argument redundant for me.

Nobody can say for sure until they're actually in that situation ............ But with my current attitude to life, I'd take a pay cut to stay at a club that I wanted to play for, either because I supported them, would be more likely to start, or win trophies.

It is easy for me to sit here and say I'd stay for £20k or £30k but if some team waltzed in and offered to triple or quadruple my money for a few years I honestly couldn't say what I'd do. As big a fan as I am.

I'd never tire of playing for Celtic but it is a short career, as is so often said. If I had achieved a lot at the club and been there for a good few years, I'd have to seriously consider it.

If you're a supporter you will always be a supporter, even if you're plying yer trade elswhere, you can still love Celtic and earn big bucks at another club.

I'd probably stay for at least half of my career earning 20 thousand pound a week, and then make the move only if it was to one of the big clubs in the EPL and only if they offered me over 100k a week.

A wage increase of 80 thousand per week would be to much to turn down.

    This old chestnut.

Really is near on impossible for us regular folk to answer. These pros have dedicated their whole life to the sport and it's completely natural for them to want to test and better themselves.

Their mindset is completely different, for a start it's their career - it's what feeds the family. It doesn't matter wether you earn £50k a year or £50k a week, humans are greedy and everyone wants more. The more you get, the more you want.

When I look back at Larsson leaving, it was horrible at the time seeing my hero leave, but * did I feel proud when he lifted old big ears over his head. Being tossed up in the air and lauded by greats like Ronaldinho, Xavi, Puyol, Iniesta as if he was some kind of Ghod. Winning La Ligas, the Prem, cups and of course the aforementioned.

In hindsight, I'm glad he moved on and accomplished what his incredible talent deserved. He achieved all he could at Celtic, and I think that relates well to the hypothetical.

If someone like Tierney, or any other Celtic supporting player, felt he had achieved all he could at the club, and was hungry for more, I would have absolutely no problems with him pursuing different avenues.

You think you would be able to do it just for a few years?

Like say to celtic, I have an opportunity here, I can get 80k a week and live in Spain for 4 years. I will resign with celtic at a sensible wage after these 4 years.

Best of both worlds, just got to make sure you dont nose dive when abroad.

    Was going to say that.

If I was that good then I'm sure I could come back and give some good years once I'd earned a fair whack. It would take away from the 'one club man' aspect, mind.

    I don't think so, no.

However that is natural due to me being a massive supporter. I'd like to think I'd want to challenge myself though and that could also come into it, as well as the money. I might never be as happy as I was at Celtic but if I went on to be a success at a decent club abroad, while earning a lot of money and living a good life, I'd still be pretty pleased with how I'd done.

It sounds shallow to go for the money but no-one can really say for sure how they'd react if someone offered them say, £80k a week plus bonuses when you are earning £20k at the minute. Add to that the fact you'd probably be going to what most would class as a 'better league' to play both with and amongst better players, and it is an enticing prospect. I can't deny that.
