A delay at the Newcastle end has left Celtic facing a race against the clock to re-sign Fraser Forster in time to face Sion in tomorrow’s Europa League qualifier.
After months of patiently chipping away at Newcastle’s resistance, Hoops boss Neil Lennon hoped he had finally managed to secure agreement to allow the giant shot-stopper to return to Parkhead on a season-long loan.
Celtic have already had two offers to buy Forster rejected by Newcastle, the highest bid being £1.5m.
It’s understood that part of this new deal would be the option to buy the 23-year-old for around £2million at the end of this latest loan.
Celtic have until 11pm to register Forster as their wildcard signing for eligibility to play in the two legs of the knock out round of the Europa League against Sion.
And, with a hold up emerging at the Newcastle end – they would still prefer to sell rather than loan him – this plan could now be derailed, leaving Lukasz Zaluska to line up against the Swiss.
If Celtic can’t complete the Forster deal in time for him to face Sion, they will continue to work to overcome the last-minute hitch and get him here in time to play against St Johnstone on Sunday.
The next signing deadline for Europe is September 1, when the transfer window closes.
But, having worked so hard to get Forster, Lennon wants him here as quickly as possible.
He has had options if he could not get the man who kept a record number of clean sheets for the club last season, and several irons remain in the fire.
But, having worked with Forster for a season, Lennon is convinced he is the best man for the job.
The Celtic manager is also trying to nail down another striker. Borussia Monchengladbach star Mo Idrissou was expected to start a short trial at Lennoxtown this week, but this has yet to begin. Norwegian hitman Erik Huseklepp continues to be linked with a move from Bari.
A decent run in Europe this season would boost Lennon’s spending power. But he is also looking to offload some players, and it will have been noted that Jos Hooiveld, Morten Rasmussen and Daryl Murphy have not made it into his 25-man squad for the Europa qualifiers.
