OK witness of the prosecution in the dock. Being cross examined by Leigh's defence.

Did you hear Leigh singing Skacel, refugee chant'
    'Yeah, I heard Leigh singing'
'How many was singing the song, could you clearly hear Griffiths singing those words'
Umm, I can't say for sure, it was very loud, there was a lot of people singing but it looked like he was'
Did you have anything to drink?
    Yes, 4 pints.
    No further questions.

Drunks testifying against someone is a criminal defence lawyers wet dream! Not everyone in the pub might have been drinking, however I would guess the majority were. More so, how many hibs fans are going to bother testifying against a fellow fan who was singing a song to wind up Hearts. Some may not agreed with it, but they will be hard sought to find witnesses willing to testify.

And regarding video evidence, that poor quality very short clip is actually more likely to work in Leighs defence. Video evidence is always used as a last resort in prosecution, and I would surprised if they even bother to put the video forward as evidence. Leigh's defence might though.

Yup it should've been dealt with swiftly. Another shambles in Scottish football.

You still haven't answered my point that criminal cases have to be proven beyond all reasonable doubt, whereas club punishments can be given out based on a common sense level of proof.

Inishmurray sounds the sort of place I have in mind, but the documentary I saw was probably from arund the 70s, and Inishmurray's been empty since the 40s, sadly. :54: But aye, I can definitely see why they'd come to Glasgow. I think you're spot on in that most Celtic fans will have similar stories.

I don't think it's crazy at all to want to learn Irish. The language has been robbed from us because of the machinations of Westminster and the City of London, it's only right to want to reclaim it. So much music, poetry and culture remains untranslated in Irish. The only way to appreciate it, is to reclaim it. :icon_mrgreen: Sadly the Sligo dialect is dead. Mayo's next door but there's no real resources to learn Mayo Irish except living in a wee auld granny's house doing odd jobs and listening to table conversation. :smiley-laughing002: You could go with Galway Irish and there's an excellent textbook and audio available for that, with Michael O'Siadhail's Learning Irish. But Sligo Irish had a lot of similarities to Donegal Irish, and there's a broadly Ulster Irish textbook and audio course available, which is Tús Maith.

I asked you how and why those Irishmen that founded Celtic ended up living, or being born, in Glasgow. Something which you failed to answer by the way. This was after you had suggested that Celtic had not been formed by refugees, and that it was, quite incredibly, 'bigoted' to think that! :smiley-laughing002:

Strangely enough you've not mentioned the other men that I asked about either.

How different are the dialects, North? Are they like Spanish dialects (mostly mutually comprehensible) or German dialects (virtually seperate languages)? Spanish is quite extreme in terms of dialects being mutually comprehensible I think. I saw a video on YouTube where they were speaking Hebrew (I don't understand a word of this language, they might as well have been speaking Chinese) and then the main lecturer started speaking in Ladino (seperated from Spanish for about half a millennium). I was amazed to find I could understand what he was saying fairly well (albeit this was quite a formal register).

I was only discussing criminal prosecution. I know that the club can fine him at their own leisure to an extent. Look at stokes, he got fined for going to a mates funeral. That wasn't even a criminal act.

The SFA as well may fine them, I am not very aware of what kind of guidelines they have in place but you can bet your bottom dollar they will do everything in their power to make sure a Celtic players get's punished to the maximum.

How many? Who would know why for them? Can you tell me a number? You are making assumptions, you have no proof that the majority of the Irish moved over her to seek refuge. How many went to the USA to escape hardship or for a better life? I don't even know what point you are trying to make? You are pointing out that people from Ireland didn't just seek refuge during the potato famine? Yeah so what? So did a lot of Scottish go to America to escape from troubles.

And regarding the part in bold, are you being serious about that? I certainly hope not.

Strangely enough I'm not interested in asking about them, just because you named some that did come here to seek refuge doesn't escape the fact you were labelling people native to Scotland as refugees.

    My *! :smiley-laughing002:

I know you've spouted some nonsense today, but this has got to be right up there! Are you suggesting that Ireland did not see a mass exodus of its people through desperation?! If you are, then your whole 'If you know your history comment' is all the more laughable.

I am serious. You said that Celtic was not a club founded by refugees and that it was 'bigoted' to think that. Were you serious? :97:

Are you now conceding that some of Celtic's founding father's were refugees and sons of refugees?

Why were you only discussing that? Very few of those who want him sacked want him to face criminal charges.

I don't know what his argment is here. Without wishing to deny that people all over Europe (including Ireland) went to the Americas seeking opportunity, Ireland was almost unique in 19th century Europe in seeing a massive drop in population at a time when most of Europe had a booming population. But yeah, they all left Ireland seeking better lives, even the million or so who died. :87:

It used to be said that a man could set out from Cork and could travel through Ireland to Scotland and only notice small changes in the dialects, and that he would be understood, and could understand everything that was said. But sadly those days are long gone. :54:

The surviving Irish dialects of Munster (Cork and Kerry), Connacht (Galway and Mayo) and Ulster (Donegal) are all mutually intelligible, but you can notice their distinctions from each other. Might be a wee bit bumpy for some at the beginning, but afterwards it'll all fall into place. Because the dialects have been isolated from each other for generations due to the penetration of English, they developed marked characters. But with modern mass media, radio and television, etc., the old barriers are rapidly crumbling and the Gaeltachts are being exposed more and more to Irish speakers of different dialects (though Ulster's still under-represented, but the BBC is doing good things for Ulster Irish). It's not quite the difference between Tuscan and Sicilian, more like Serbian and Croatian. :icon_mrgreen:

Then there's Standard Irish... which is somewhere close to the dialect used in *. :smiley-laughing002:

Can you show me statistics of why people moved Is that what point you are trying to make? You are the one spouting nonsense, you have completely went off topic as well.

I caught you out when you tried to be a smart * replying to my comment saying every founder of Celtic was a refugee. Which was quite clearly not true as I pointed out.

Now you have went off on one ridiculous tangent as to the reasons why the Irish moved here, why the founders of Celtic's families moved here originally. Which doesn't interest me. The fact of the matter the vast majority of the Irish that would be classed as refugees came during the famine, and the vast majoirty went to the USA. To go on to actually shaping the USA into a massive power. from after the potato famine there was thousands of other reasons the Irish were emigrating.

Can you give me some statistics or evidence of just how many came to the Scotland as immigrants compared to complete desperation. Going somewhere to seek a better life for yourself isn't necessarily desperation.

The club should embarrass him, maybe like....shave half his hair off so that it looks like he's got a massive foreheid.

Because I don't know how Celtic will handle it. Or the SFA. Do you?

It doesn't matter if you don't want him charged, I was just giving my view as to why I don't think he will be. People have been mentioning he is under police investigation and stating they think the video could get him in trouble. Which I completely disagree with, if it even goes to court I will be stunned.

How do you think club and SFA will handle it? Not what you want, but what you think will happen.

Why don't you open a book?! The reasons for Ireland's mass exodus are quite clear to most with even the slightest grasp of Irish history!

To repeat myself, I asked you how and why you thought the Irishmen that formed Celtic came to live, or to be born, in Glasgow. This was following your suggestion that it was 'bigoted' to say that Celtic was founded by refugees.

Would you still disagree with the statement that some of Celtic's founding fathers were refugees and sons of refugees?

I'm asking you to tell me since you seem to know all about how many refugees came in as oppose to immigrants? Nobody even knows what point you are trying to make, even another poster mentioned that.

There was various reasons, but my only point was just because your father was a refugee doesn't make you one. That was my point. I'm asking you, because their father being a * fled from persecution. And had a son in Scotland. Would you regard his son (one of the founding father) as Scottish or a refugee.

I didn't say it was bigoted to say that. I was saying it was wrong to call Scottish people refugees just because past generations or their father came over as one. And it was you said I was the bigot saying that they were not founded by refugees!! For what, reason, I don't know.

Have you read the title of this thread, mate? :smiley-laughing002:
The "how do you think the club (let alone the law) will deal with Leigh Griffiths?" thread hasn't been started yet. Why don't you start it?
