Adam Matthews signs for Celtic

By: Newsroom Staff on 25 Feb, 2011 12:54
CELTIC are delighted to announce that they’ve signed defender Adam Matthews on a pre-contract agreement.

The 19-year-old, who currently plays for Cardiff City, is one of the most exciting young prospects in the Championship, and it’s a real coup for the club to have secured his signing.

Matthews, a Wales Under-21 internationalist, will join the Hoops on July 1 on a four-year contract, and will link up with his former Cardiff City team-mate and fellow Welshman, Joe Ledley, who has proved to be a great signing for the club already this season.

I wonder what part Ledley played in the deal as I would think that lots of prem clubs would be after him!

Welcome to a big club adam!! Great player. Guys, its an absolute privelage to to a celtic fan at the moment, lennon rly has brung back the thunder. Even if we dnt win anything this season (we will tho!!) Id still be happy with lennons overall performance. He has yet again delivered a quality YOUNG player in transfer market and what makes it even better is he is welsh. If i remember correctly, lennon stated at begining of summer transfer window he wanted british and irish players forming the backbone of the team. He says these things and he delivers as well. I just cant get enough. I know how this season will finish guys, so sing it loud and sing it proud!! Mon the celts.

Need to address this; McNaughton has consistently been one of our best players for the past 5 years; the only blip he's had was at the start of this season when he was dealing with injury problems and a lack of match fitness, but he's overcame that and has been quality again the past month. There is no chance Mathews is ever getting in the first team past super Kev.

The fact is, from a Cardiff point of view, Whilst losing a youngster that has came through our youth academy to a bigger team for peanuts is never good, I need to say the following things:

This 'Linked with Manchester United' stuff has never been confirmed, and many are in agreement that this was a lie from Peter Risdale.

He has barely played for us this season, so he is in no way one of our 'best' players as I've seen quoted in this thread.

The reason he didn't sign a new contract is because we couldn't guarantee him playing time.

All this talk about him being highly rated and having massive potential was all last season; fact is he's not had the chance to improve and get first team football this season so it's hard to say where he stands now.

The above paragraph is my main gripe with the whole situation; he's not got the chance this season and whether that's because Dave Jones doesn't like him, or he's not been good enough, or even because we've got too many players for him to break through and play regularly, we'll never know what could have been this season. We'll never know how good he would have turned out had he been developed fully, because this season was a complete waste for him.

What I can say I know about the player you're getting is that he is very quick, has a Delap style long throw and has a lot of confidence in his dribbling. Whilst he played at RB for us, it became apparent that he needed a lot of work defensively, but was brilliant at attacking. I'd be shocked if he wasn't converted to a right winger because he has all the right attributes. The situation is kinda like Gareth Bale getting played at Left Wing and showing he was much better up top than at the back(Note: I'm not comparing the players in skill)

In summary, I'm not here to troll, I come in peace to give my, and what I think is the general view, of fellow Cardiff City fans. I wish Adam the best of luck for the future, there are no hard feelings in the way he have departed. It's a shame you've had to leave, but It won't change the team dynamic at all next season.

Pretty much sums it up :50:

I think the main advantage we have from the deal is that 200k is peanuts compared to the potential profit we could make if he turns out to be the player he was expected to become, win-win situation for me.

I'm pretty sure he has done a couple of times, but I wouldn't trust him there. Only as a last resort tbh.

Tbf though, if he could play there properly then I'm sure DJ would have dropped the absolutely useless Lee Naylor for him. Then again, DJ is stubborn and never drops old friends even if they are *.

He's joining the perfect club to fulfil his potential and Lenny and Co will get the best out of him as they are with the youngsters already here...
