THE captain will reunite with The King. Neil Lennon, who served Celtic as captain, coach and manager over a period from 2000 to 2014, has signed up for Celtic FC Foundation’s Henrik’s Heroes v Lubo’s Legends charity match on Sunday, May 28 (KO: 2pm).

“Celtic Park is a very special place for me,” admitted the Irishman, who enjoyed extraordinary triumphs at Paradise as a player and a manager.

“As a manager, it was obviously the Barcelona match. The atmosphere was great before the game. The night was just exhilarating. The way the players performed was astonishing, the way the fans backed them was magnificent. It was just one of those great nights and, to be fair, at Celtic we had a few.

“Celtic Park is one of the great, iconic stadiums at any time but under the lights it has an extra charm, an extra edge, a touch of romance.”

And his highlights as a player? “When we beat Manchester United to qualify for the last 16 and the 4-3 Juventus game as well,” he said.

Not surprisingly, Neil Lennon’s respect for his two former team-mates, Messrs Larsson and Moravcik, is undimmed by the passing of time.

“They were just very special,” he said. “Henrik was the best player I ever played with. He is one of the greatest players ever to put the Celtic shirt on.

“He was a brilliant team-mate. You just knew when you had him on your side you had a chance of winning the game, any game. He could score at any time, he could score any type of goal. He was a very, very special player. These guys come along once in a generation, if you are lucky.

“Lubo was mercurial. He made things happen. He was a dynamic player with both feet. Both of them were marvellous footballers but they were ruthless too. In front of goal, they were deadly. The volume of goals that Henrik scored was extraordinary and Lubo had that touch of magic about him.”

And the former Celt, now on the verge of guiding Hibernian back to the Premiership, is delighted that the Lisbon Lions will be saluted at the match 50 years after their triumph of winning the European Cup.

“I was very, very lucky to meet them all,” he said. “They are a special group. Unfortunately we lost Tommy Gemmell this year but they all had their own personality, they all have their own self-confidence that comes with the gravitas of winning the European Cup.

“It is the greatest team the club has ever had. But as former players they are also fantastic ambassadors for the club. It will be great to see them in front of the supporters who love and respect them so much.”

And the Irishman is pleased, too, that Celtic FC Foundation will benefit financially from the match. “There are many people at the club who do fantastic work away from the football side of things,” he said. “The amount of money they have raised over the years has been phenomenal. This is an integral part of the club, it is in the fabric of the club.”

ALAN Stubbs has signed up for the Henrik’s Heroes v Lubo’s Legends match on May 28 and is delighted at the prospect of returning to Celtic Park and meeting up with team mates who became close friends.

The former Celt who scored six goals in 114 games between 1996 and 2001 said: “We were very lucky because we were blessed with fantastic players. I had the privilege of playing in a very talented team.

“Henrik was a fantastic player but he was a great member of the squad as well because he involved himself in everything we did as a team.

“We had a great camaraderie. We did a lot of things together and that shone through. We had a team full of ability but we had a real bond.”

Stubbs also paid tribute to the strength of character in the dressing room. He said: “We had a lot of winners. Henrik was certainly one of them. We had a lot of players who wanted the best and drove each other on to be the best.”

As a centre-half with the Hoops, Stubbs, who won two titles, a Scottish Cup and three league cups also enjoyed watching Lubo perform in front of him.

He said: “Lubo was a maverick. He was a fantastically gifted footballer who didn’t say too much off the park but he talked with his feet and brain on it. He had unbelievable quality and technically was one of the best I have played with. His touch was exquisite.”

Stubbs expects to be playing in front of a huge crowd with tickets for the match selling fast. He said: “Celtic Park is up there with any atmosphere in the world. You just have to listen to top-class players who come to Celtic Park. It is something that you never forget. It really is a special occasion.

“As a Celtic player you can feel how much the fans love the club. You are proud to put that shirt on and walk down the tunnel.”

“The warmth in the welcome at Celtic Park is something I have never experienced anywhere else. This is a family.”

And the Lisbon Lions are very much a part of that family. The former Celt is delighted that the 1967 European Cup triumph will be saluted at the charity match.

“They will never be forgotten,” he said. “I know John Clark well and he has a really dry sense of humour and he would tell the tales of Lisbon. They are lovely people, very humble.”

He is certain, too, of the role of the Foundation in the club.

“It is in the club’s DNA,” he said. “Celtic always like to give. Just look at the number of people that have been helped by Celtic FC Foundation. It is a fantastic cause and it is a privilege to be asked to play in it.”

He added: “Every player will say the same. We all know we are helping people in need, it is the Celtic way.”

WITH more than 50,000 tickets already sold, Celtic FC Foundation’s Henrik’s Heroes v Lubo’s Legends charity match is heading for a sell-out at Celtic Park on Sunday, May 28 (KO: 2pm). A host of former players are already signed up to take part and the match promises to be a great spectacle.

And the official Celtic website caught up with one of the stars of the show, Lubo Moravcik, to hear about his excitement in the run-up to the game.

“The match will be a fantastic occasion and it will be great to be back at Celtic Park”, said Lubo. “I want to win this match. I want to every game I play, it’s the type of player and person I am.

"I think Celtic share the same desire and determination to win and be the best. The score in the match could be anything but we’ll be delighted see each other once again. To play in Celtic Park again and see the stands full will be great.”

The Slovakian playmaker is thoroughly looking forward to seeing his former team-mates and discussed his admiration for Henrik Larsson in particular. He said: “To describe Henrik in a word, it would be, fantastic. He was one of the best in his position.

“I actually looked on the Internet to see how many goals he scored for Celtic, 242 goals in 315 games - it’s crazy. He performed and scored goals at the highest level in World Cups and European Championships. He won the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona and played a very important role in that victory. He must be very proud of everything that he’s achieved in his football career.”

And Lubo also spoke of his first appearance against Rangers, as he famously netted twice to help the Celts to a 5-1 victory.

“In life you have to be ready for challenges and I think I was ready for this game," he said. "I was focused on the game and when the situation arose, I was ready to score.

“I was a little bit scared of my first game against Rangers as I knew how important the match was to everyone at Celtic. But I stayed focused and determined to do well in the game and when I got my goal I was very pleased. I was still a bit shocked though and I hadn’t prepared any celebration or anything.

"Scoring two goals against Rangers in the 3-0 win at Ibrox in 2001 also stands out for me. It was a great moment in my football life. I was able to show the fans the best of my ability and that I was willing to work hard for the club. We went on to win the treble that season which was very special.

“The fact it’s only been done three times in the club’s history shows how important it was. This season perhaps the team will achieve it for the fourth time and I really hope the players go on and do it.

“As I played for the national team more and more, I obviously dreamed of playing for a big club. I had played at some great clubs but Celtic was different. I always had the confidence that I had the qualities to play at a big club, Celtic gave me that opportunity and I’m very happy I was given that chance.”

When asked how he thought the result would pan out between Lubo's Legends and Henrik's Heroes on May 28, Lubo said: “At my age now of 52 it won’t be easy to play on the big pitch but I’ll be doing my best.

"I think everyone will be a winner on the day, the people in the stands, the players on the pitch and those who will benefit through the work of Celtic FC Foundation.”

Sponsored by Dafabet and Utilita, Henrik’s Heroes versus Lubo’s Legends will take place at Celtic Park on Sunday, May 28, 2017, with a 2pm kick-off.

EVERYONE remembers their day in the sun. Bobby Petta turned in many fine performances for Celtic between 1999 and 2004, but his masterpiece was in the 6-2 victory over Rangers in 2000.

Petta, who has signed up to play in the Henrik’s Heroes v Lubo’s Legends match at Celtic Park on May 28, said: “That match was memorable because of the result and it was my first game against Rangers and it was Martin O’Neill’s first too. I played well so I was happy with that. The Celtic fans seem to remember my performance too.”

The support also recall the marvellous chipped goal by Henrik that seemed to gild the most golden of triumphs.

Petta said: “That is one of the best goals I have seen, particularly given the circumstances. This was such a big match and to finish in such fantastic style takes technique and bravery.

“It was something that you wouldn’t expect in a game like that but that is typical Henrik. He does not do things you would expect. He makes everything look so easy.”

And what of Lubo, whose party piece was also to put Rangers to the sword?

“He was one of my favourites,” said the Dutchman. “I had seen him before he joined Celtic so I knew how good he was.

“He understood the game so well. He was a great striker of the ball whether passing, shooting or crossing. He was a very intelligent player, and a joy to play with.”

The former Celt still plays regularly in charity matches, and is looking forward to playing at a packed Celtic Park on the big day, especially considering the charitable status of the match.

He said: “I am in decent shape for 42 and am delighted to have the chance of running out at a stadium I love.

“Celtic was born because of charity. It is great that this will help the Foundation with its goals and it may also raise awareness. Every fan should know about the Foundation.

“Football is great for bringing people together and I am sure there will be 60,000 people at Celtic Park that day who will come together to enjoy a great afternoon and help others who are not so fortunate. It is great to be part of it all.”

He is particularly pleased that there will be a salute to the Lisbon Lions on the 50th anniversary of their European Cup success.

“These guys played a big part in the big history of a big club. It is wonderful that we have the chance to show our appreciation to them,” he said.
