I will buck the trend and say I think a good player has been ruined by all this contract malarky. I honestly think if Celtic had sorted this in the summer we would have seen the POTY Caldwell form of the previous season and a half again. Put yourself in his place. As the season started, he was a freshly awarded POTY and captain of the side but he was on much lower wages than many of his poorer performing team mates. Who wouldnt feel unsettled by that? At that time, remember, all the poor form was still in the future. Last summer is the point in time you should focus on not the period since. That is the point where he seems to have lost focus. On form I maintain he is a bit of a one-off player. Not a typical CH but a very good player who was crucial to our passing game. Big hammer thrower stoppers are common but a player like Caldwell (when on form as he was in the previous season and a half) is really really rare. I think however that there is too much bad feeling. * is Mowbray doing though making him skipper when he is openly cricising him and Caldwell is clearly going to go. I will say this, Caldwell was a great player for WGS and Celtic in the previous season and a half and also when he first signed and this contract thing has ruined him.

You would think a club like newcastle would learn, but they never seem too.

The guy will get well found out more down in england, just like he does at european and international level.

Cant wait to January hopefully Mick joins him.

I worry he will sign a pre contract and we will have to suffer him until the end of the season. The sooner O'Dea returns the better. :shamrock:

pre-contract would suit noone. If he is going then we should sell in January even if we only get a few hundred grand. Still, this has all been badly mismanaged. If we had either sold our POTY in the summer we would maybe have got a few million. To neither sell him or give him a new contract has meant everyone loses. Terrible management of the situation by the club IMO. Why the * did they not get all the cards on the table at the end of last season. Really really weird when you consider he was our best player then too.

Personally I think the Caldwell situation is an insight into the future with us selling players on when they get to that 'biggest contract of their career' stage in their later 20s. I think we just wont be paying the sort of money players are looking for in the last big contract that takes them into their 30s. I cant believe people do not see this subtext and just stick to the Caldwell GTF stuff,

I don't think his heart is in it anymore and he wasn't even that good when his heart was in it. I'd try and get him out the door in January so we can get some money for him. Even if it's only a few hundred grand it would still be something.

Plus, Caldwell is obviously one of the more outspoken individuals in that dressing room so IF his heart isn't in it anymore then he could be a disruptive influence in the dressing room.

He is the best defender we have have so why get rid if you dont have some one better.
The two other CB's we have are even worse, doesn't make sense to me :87:

    Appologies.

But I still think he is our best CB so why get rid of him?

How about trying to improve the team?

Fair enough and like i said my language was uncalled for and i appologise, but sometimes our so called fans are so hard on the players and yes Caldwell has been poor this season but he is our best CB and we need to improve the team not dismantle it.

Good man with the apology .

I would have agreed with you up until as late as 2 weeks ago ,ive defended Caldwell all the way through this grim spell for him hoping he would come out the other end ,but there are no signs of this happening from him and as much as i would like him to stay and regain his confidence ,i think his time has come to move on .

He has stated that Celtic havent offered him a contract and that suggests to me that they are not willing to offer him what he wants ,i do wish he would get his act together and prove he is worth another contract but the signs are there now that his time is limited.

The guy has had his time. He has been here for 3 1/2 season, and with the exception of a few months last season, when he was a half decent (again, its relative, considering McManus let the side down, trying to play when clearly not fit), he has proven a liability since day one.

    Go.

    & I talk *?

Listen pal, look at the reality of the situation - just cos he's sometimes better than the other 2 doesn't make him worth 1 million quid a year.

Celtic have offered him a contract & he is refusing to sign it.

We are not actually getting rid of him, he's choosing to work his ticket - same as he did at his previous clubs.

Do you honestly think his wage demands are justified, not just in the lead up to the present moment - but in his entire Celtic career?

He is no better then Darren Dodds or Zander Diamond.

By the way, if you speak to people like that in the real world - you may wish to think twice. :50:
