No I was just stating the games you said he played well against were bottom 6 sides, i didnt check if he actually got motm i took your word for it imo he was * affter the opening months of the season. Hartley has never been asked to do the role he did at Hearts so your point cannot be proven and least Hartley can pass 5 yards, Donati may be able to pass the odd 30 yarder but his lack of ability to play 5 yard passes when it is needed at times is unbeliavable.

i think that although he played well throughout last season we have a number of younger more talented midfielders and that they should be given the nod ahead of him, maybe use for away cl games or something but no major role in the team

If an away CL game isn't important then I don't know what you count as an important game, especially considering our away form in the CL!

And sometimes talent isn't enough in games. Experience can count for far more at times than raw talent.

Hartley plays the holding role in midfield. The holding player usually sits in front of the back 4.It seems to me that Hartley(holding midfielder)makes himself available often to accept passes from the defence, that is part of his role as well as defensive cover. To say that he"turns his back"on the back 4 suggests that he is playing further forward than his role dictates. That's where I was coming from.

To my mind Hartley makes himself available to take possession from the defence and allow other creative midfielders do what they do best, create. He also performs defensive duties very well and I dont think its any coincidence that the defence(particularly Caldwell)looked more solid when he was moved to this position.

We will just have to disagree about the merits of Donati I'm afraid.

Time for me to join in here Gary B.

Paul Hartley plays a very different role from the one he played at Hearts. He was a major goal threat at because at Hearts he was an attacking midfielder.

Now days at Celtic at Celtic to say he does not score many goals would be an understatement. He has as far is I know socred one goal so far in his Celtic career so far. But that is because he plays a very diffrent role under Strachan. AsGary B said Hartley takes possesion and builds play from it and also acts as a saftey net for the back four. Just watch when Celtic get a cornor and miss and the other team are on the counter it is normally Hartley that stops there breakaway holding the midfield.

On the subject of Donati verus Hartley? Well Hartley always gives 100 percent whilst Dodo Donati looks like he does not want to be on the park half the time.

I've no idea if he was given the official MOTM awards it was just my opinion but they don't mean thoses awards don't mean that much to me anyway as they're often inaccurate hence Hartley getting the offical MOTM against ST.Mirren.

As you say my opinion can't be proven but I think it's plain to see that Hartley doesn't have the engine he once had.

We're going around in circles with Donati so I'll leave it OK?

Yeah this is my last post on the topic *touch wood* lol

Hartleys engine is like a buzz bomb when the teams back is against the wall or Scotlands So I think you see his engine still when playing DM your not just a role you can fulfill while coming to the end of your career.

last post in the topic hopefully

I wasn't suggesting that he is playing farther up than he should. For me when one of our CBs have the ball he doesn't turn to them and demand it he just turns his back to them and lets them pump it upfield.IMO a player in his role should be the one who starts off attacks but he rarely does this.I think that is one of the reasons why Strachan has often preferred Donati and why we have signed Crosas.

Any defence in the world will look more solid if you place a holding midfielder in front of them.Personally I think if our CBs need a holding midfielder in front of them in home games against St.Mirren then they are not good enough.

Fair enough about Donati, didn't mean to get sidetracked.

Teddy Bjarnasson must be sitting back in Iceland thinking 'how the * did Strachan not give me a chance in THAT midfield?'

    Im better than Hartley

THis is absoloutley unbelievable. I cant believe that people are saying these type of things about Paul Hartley. I keep repeating myself on every thread that slates Paul Hartley and I'll do so again. Paul Hartley and Barry Robson won us the league last season when Strachan finally got his midfield tactics correct. Paul Hartley never had one bad game for us last season and still got dropped at every opportunity. I cannot understand what people dont like about Hartley. He can play in about three or four different midfield positions. Right now he's playing Neil Lennon's old role but doing it better, he's faster, can pass the ball, he can run with the ball, cross the ball and set up chances. Maybe the ONLY thing I would ask of him is to take more shots on goal. Paul Hartley hasnt put a foot wrong for Celtic it was his and Robson's passion and drive that won us the league last year. You all need to open your eyes and get off the guy's back. Paul Hartley is a great player and Celtic through and through

    You obviously dont rate him!!!

Nevertheless,Hartley would still have along way to go before he was as big a dud as your favourite Gravesen.

I think we just see different things with Hartley and his role in the team and that's just the way things go sometimes.

RE the role of a holding midfielder. You must agree for a large part of last season, the defence looked shaky and I think one of the main reasons for that was the lack of cover and solidity in the CM area.Brown and Donati just didnt work as a partnership IMO and obviously WGS recognised this.I know you have some reservations about Hartley's abilities, but I think you might agree that we became more solid and harder to play through when Hartley and Robson became the CM partnership.I really hope Crosas turns out to be a good addition mate, but I want to see him play a bit more before I pass judgement.
