The cycle will be a good warm up for your legs imo.

I cycle, swim and run more often now. Prefer that to the gym, bit more interesting and works really well.

Gym i go to only has a smith machine, no barbell :/

Though there is decent substitutes in a bar with a pulley, not free bar though. I have tried the squats and it was before i started training legs and i found them hard on the smith so i wana build a base strength on the leg-press machine before i go back to them. I will wana do deadlifts too.

Cycling is very good for my legs thats true. I get round the corner straight from leaving mine and its a hill i have to climb, ma legs are nacking after leaving the house a minute lol !

I used to Swim a lot. Best thing there is imo. Was in my best shape when i swam. Am just unfit compared to what a used to be. Got the shape still but not as lean.

whats would you say is the best, free weights or fixed resistance? currently i use fixed resistance, but when ever ive gone into the free weights room at the gym, all the guys there are * tanks. i spoke to one and he said that he only started to use free weights because he could lift all the weight in the fixed resistance machines.

so aye, which would people say is better, free weights or fixed resistance?

Just use dumbells, but stand to bring the sore in. The smith machine is good actually for beginners as its safer. That's the whole point, they need to be hard!!

Free weights, as they use stabiliser muscles aswell. I know what you mean about the guys though, thats why I hate going to the gym. Just wish I had everything in my garage!!

    YouTube - Dumbell Front Squats

Yeah av done them before, but i use one dumbbell and old it with my arms at both sides of it. But like this video.

When i say hard i mean i was almost dropping them. But i see no problem with the smith for me atm. Once i use the bar free i will start with low weight and add 1kg a week or something

Takes years for to get where you want to be without any aid. Thats why all you can do is focus on what you have and what you are doing. I admit i look and think they're massive or whatever, but it takes time.

I'm sure we'd all choose to have what we want in a body if we could, but we can't really so just give it yer best i would say.

Identify the parts of your body you think need working on and use more reps with a lighter weight rather than the reverse, to create a good v shape do lateral exercises with olympic bar or dumbells............:50:

    Good point about light weights.

I done dumbbell shoulder press the other day with 10kg's and it really, really was harder as you have to control them and the movement. Which means you're using more of the muscle.

As i progress through sets, i like to increase the weight too. But when going for tone i stay with the lighter one for all the sets.

Don't put the weight up too much though, you don't want to injure yourself.

On a side note, I dislike the way the word 'injure' is spelled.

Only one I found on amazon was for about £50odd.

Theres a programme I want to try called AthleanX. It's about £45 so i'm still contemplating it atm. The guy seems decent though, has a youtube channel where he puts workouts on and it's very popular. I'm a bit sceptical about paying as I know exercises to do in the gym, but looking at reviews and the fact he was head trainer at the NY mets, he knows how to get good results
