Celtic are set shift another fringe man for a chunky transfer fee with Gustaf Lagerbielke talked up for a permanent move to the Netherlands – with the Hoops' decision not to include a fixed option to buy poised to pay off.

Lagerbielke joined the Hoops from Elfsborg in a £3m deal in 2023 but has struggled to make the grade and he was loaned out to FC Twente late in the summer window. That move has worked out for him with a slate of impressive displays set to earn him a permanent move away, and he's expected to at least recoup the fee the Hoops paid for him almost two years ago

It continues Celtic's impressive recent trend of banking strong fees for fringe players – this season alone they've sold Alexandro Bernabei, Mikey Johnston and Hyeongu Oh for north of £10m combined.

Amid his impressive rise in the Netherlands, former Ajax chief scout Hans van der Zee revealed Celtic beat the Dutch giants to land Lagerbielke in 2023 – and while he's claiming the last laugh after his move to Parkhead didn't work out, it's worth noting the Hoops' refusal to include a fixed price buy option may well pay off. Reports in the Netherlands claim Twente fear they will be priced out of the move because they didn't include a clause in the deal to fix a transfer fee – which could open the door to other clubs to spark a bidding war to drive up the price

Former Ajax talent spotter Van der Zee isn't surprised and said of the 24-year-old : "I thought Lagerbielke was a positive influence for Twente again and played well. When I was at Ajax, I also had him in mind for the club and suggested buying him when he was still playing for Elfsborg. But he went to Celtic for 3.5million euros instead

"He didn't do well at Celtic, otherwise they wouldn't have loaned him out - they would have kept him."

And former Dutch World Cup winner and ex-Southampton and PSV Eindhoven manager Jan Poortvliet has been hugely impressed by the Hoops player too. He said: "Gustaf Lagerbielke immediately caught my eye at Twente. He plays very relaxed, has qualities of building from the back and is defensively strong, where he is well positioned. He is quite tall, but also quite athletic and comfortable on the ball."

I thought it was madness not including a buy option but that would've left us in a Jack Hendry situation where Twente would've activated the clause and then immediately sold him for more money to another club.

Tbh I'd pay anyone to take Hendry. He was absolutely woeful.

He's one who will have a good career elsewhere, most would have said that. Just didn't fit what we require.

Celtic are pricing outcast Gustaf Lagerbielke out of his dream move to Dutch football, according to Twente Enschede technical director Arnold Bruggink.

The 24-year-old is on loan with the Eredivisie club until the end of the season and is then due to return to Parkhead, where he still has three years left on his deal.

Lagerbielke revealed at the weekend he wanted to turn the loan move into a permanent one, but it depended on Twente and Celtic reaching an agreement.

And, according to Bruggink, there doesn't seem much hope of that.

He said: "In this case, we are dependent on what Celtic want. They are asking for quite a bit of money.

"He is a very stable defender. We would like to make the deal permanent, but I think it is not very realistic at the moment."

The Swedish international cost Celtic £3 million when he signed from homeland club Elfsborg two years ago. However, he made only four league starts and was shipped off to the Netherlands on loan

    That's how it goes..

He's performed well in the eredivisie, Europe for them and been called up by Sweden more than once whilst there im sure..

There was no set price, that's what happened to us with Idah. I'd be looking for around 4-5 mill given his performances and age. He's just too slow and no suited to us..

I would like to see him play for us again as he is a good player. Tricky though as it is also a good time to sell after a successful loan spell.

But he is kind of thin and i think we need absolute beasts added to the team.

Given the performances he has put in this season with a decent side in the eredivisie you would think while Twente may not be able to afford him we have a good chance of another club coming in with a bid and us actually being able to make a profit on what we paid for him as well.

It is bizarre that a player is good enough to play in a league considered the top 5 (Ligue 1 lost its spot to the Eredivisie), but not good enough to play in a far worse league. I think Rodgers wrote him off too early.

    I disagree..

He was never suited to our high line. Far too slow..

They're a what, 5th best kinda Dutch side? No great. The defences over there are quite poor in general for me and I doubt they play anywhere as high a line as us..

We should earn a profit and get rid ASAP..

The high line is the issue - we should play a mid block more often. It's not like we have loads of fast CB-s anyway.

No point paying the lad a wage to sit and fester on the sidelines, take what we can get and remove him from the wage bill.

Rangers have caused us so much trouble with pacey wide men. When the issue is not one player at CB, but several of them (plus Taylor at LB), then things need to change. Tactically.

Lagerbielke would at least give us height at set pieces.
