Even if they were offering to pay us 10% of his wages, it's still a saving each * week. Means he goes out and plays games and he might then have a chance of signing somewhere else if he puts in some decent enough performances.

GUSTAF LAGERBIELKE is set to stay at Celtic - after Lecce resigned themselves to missing out on the Swede.

The 23-year-old Hoops defender was on the brink of a move to Italy earlier this week.

But a fresh injury to Cameron Carter-Vickers forced Celtic into a rethink at the last minute.

Lagerbielke, a £3million summer signing from Elfsborg, had been deemed surplus to requirements by Brendan Rodgers.

Italian reports now state that Lecce are "90 per cent" certain that they won't be landing him ahead of Italy's 7pm deadline.

Celtic need him as defensive cover, with Maik Nawrocki and Liam Scales set to start

I actually feel sorry for this lad. Clearly not a Rodgers signing and he has been frozen out thinking he finally will get consistent game time in Italy only to have the rug pulled the very last minute.

Don’t get me wrong I think he is totally * in relation to the way we play but I do feel for him.

Just another example of a badly managed situation. Our whole 'winging it' strategy in a microcosm. Basically told the guy he isn't wanted or needed and now CCV is injured he can't progress his career but has to stick around and still not get a game.

    Gustaf Lagerbielke transfer U-turn
"We had an interest in Gustaf for a few weeks and I was happy for him to go but only when everything here in-house was taken care of purely because of the history of our centre halves in the first part of the season. Cam, Maik and Welshy - three of those guys have been injured for significant periods. The last thing I wanted to do was let a player go out until I was sure and safe enough to know that those guys could be fit. I spoke to Gustaf and said that after the last game that we played against Ross County, I'd make a decision then, long behold, Cam picks up his injury which keeps him out for a few weeks, and at that point, I can't let him go out because it's another bit of evidence that I need to ensure that I look after the squad for the second part of the season. So it was tough on Gus because he's a good guy and he wanted to go and get minutes and play. But first and foremost, I have to look after the club and make sure that the team and squad is ready for the second part of the season. So that was the reason why he didn't go."

GUSTAF LAGERBIELKE's wages at Celtic have been revealed - by a rival director of football who missed out on signing him.

The 23-year-old defender, who signed for the Hoops for £3m in the summer, was a target for Serie A side Lecce in the January transfer window.

But on deadline day the move collapsed, with Brendan Rodgers needing more defensive cover following a fresh injury to fellow centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Lagerbielke told Celtic that he wanted to go but the club insisted that the deal, which would have been a loan, couldn't go through.

In the aftermath of the transfer window, Lecce chief Pantaleo Corvino was asked what happened with the pursuit of Celtic's Swedish international.

He revealed his club showed interest in the player in the summer but were put off by "exorbitant" wage demands.

Indeed, when Lagerbielke was linked to the Italian side again last month, it was understood the Parkhead club would cover at least a portion of his salary.

It's claimed Lagerbielke agreed to terms on a contract worth 800,000 euro per year with Celts, equal to around £685,000.

That works out at around £13,182 a week and £57,122 per month.

Corvino also seemed to suggest that it wasn't necessarily a done deal and that Lecce were content with their defensive options going into January.

He said: "We appreciated his desire to come to Lecce.

"This summer we were interested, but we couldn't keep up with the exorbitant demands, so he went to Celtic for 4.5 million and 800 thousand euros in salary.

"We had (Marin) Pongracic and (Federico) Baschirotto. When he didn't feel comfortable, he and his agent asked us to come to Lecce. It was his request.

"However, we had already assessed Pongracic, Baschirotto, (Ahmed) Touba and (Sebastian) Esposito as suitable at the beginning of January."

As he made his come-and-get-me plea to Lecce, Lagerbielke was quoted as saying: "Lecce has shown a very strong interest in me. I want to go, play and make a difference.

"All footballers dream of playing in the big leagues. And I have dreamed of Serie A since I was a child.

"Many Scandinavian footballers have played in Lecce, this would be an advantage in terms of settling in."

It really is on top of that it also equates to £13k a week which is a crazy good salary for anyone really but in professional football it is fairly low especially at a team that plays CL football.

Interesting for us though, gives a good idea of how much we usually offer for players coming in around that pedigree and age

£13,182 is a lot of money, but it isn't that high for an international player playing for a big club.

When the English Premier league has an average salary of £60,000 per week I'm surprised that a Serie A club thinks £13,182 is exorbitant.

Defender of the year last year.

He wants to play, he´s pushing for a regular spot in the national side.
    It´s not rocket science.
I´ve followed him since he came through, one of the best Swedish defensive talents in recent memory.

Celtic´s signing of Gus, and subsequent handling up to the January window, is a total car crash.
The club couldn´t have made a bigger mess of it if they tried again.

On top of everything else, there´s a risk that this will make other young talent think again when Celtic come around.

Would be interesting to hear from whoever signed off on the deal in the first place.
    Or maybe not.
