    I agree :50:

And I'm not exactly a Suarez fan.

I don't like the way this has just become a United-Liverpool debate. All the opinions would be 180 if it was say hernandez and glen johnson.

The issue for me is that Luis Suarez brought the race into the equation on the football pitch (he admitted he said 'negrito'). That is racist, full stop. I don't think context even comes into it. If you were trying to get past a black person you wouldn't say 'excuse me black man' or anything like that. You don't go into the corner shop and say 'I'll have 20 * Pakistani guy'. If he is committed to all the anti racism initiatives he says he is then why does he still see Evra as black, rather than as just a man?

He deserves what he gets, personally I would have fined him more too, £40,000 is about a weekends pocket money for him. If he appeals it I'd ban him until the end of the season.

Because Evra is black? I don't quite get that argument, every black guy I know if you gad to say I don't see you as black I see you as a man. They'd be like *? :56:

Racism is always about context though, Suarez who is mixed race himself isn't a racist.

    Mibbe because he is black?

I mean, if he'd said "good tackle wee man", would you be questioning why he still sees Evra as small, rather than just as a man?

Mentioning someone's skin colour is not in itself racism.

Why is he looking at Evra and seeing him as just a black guy, someone to say something nasty to? If he is not a racist then why is he making comments about Evra's race? There is clearly some sort of prejudice there. You obviously wouldn't say that to a black person in those exact words (you'd sound like an idiot) but you can see the point I am making, and at the same time you wouldn't make a comment to every black person you know about their skin colour or they would be forgiven for thinking you were a racist, no?

Also, just because he is mixed race he isn't a racist? Come on.

I actually can't see the point you are making and Uraguay is one of the most progressive cultures regarding race in the world. Negrito is a word that is used to describe a small person that just happens to be black, the race really doesn't matter.

Considering Suarez himself is mixed race and has been part of a lot of anti-racism campeigns by his own accord, I don't think you can accuse him of being racist.

Yeah - the real irony is, what Suarez said would only be viewed as racist in a country where racism was a problem.

"Negrito" just means "wee black guy". And in a truly enlightened country where people didn't give a * about race, the "black" bit would be no more offensive than the "wee" bit.

The FA are effectively saying to him, "yes, that term may be perfectly OK in your own country, but it is unacceptable in ours."

But what they seem utterly oblivious to is that this is because Uruguay is a less racist society than the UK.

Uruguay might well be a progressive country (I read the Tim Vickery article earlier, that is my only knowledge of this so I am taking it as fact) but that does not mean that the actions of the entire population at home and abroad are going to be squeaky clean.

I can understand that this is maybe a word which is OK in Uruguay, but in England, as well as in 99% of the rest of the world, making comments about someones race like that are seen as a faux pas to say the least. Suarez has played in Europe for almost his entire career, he knows that making comments about race is not on. Ignorance is not an excuse for me here.

If come derby day Lafferty was pushing past Victor saying 'let me past you big black lad' or something like that people would be screaming racism.

As for the racism initiatives, I would imagine the players are asked to be in them, rather than the other way around. Mario Balotelli was the poster boy for firework safety a day or two after setting them off in his house. People don't always practise what they preach.

My original comment, to put it another way, when I look at Victor Wanyama, my first thought isn't 'he's black'. I look at him and think, 'he's massive' 'he's a great footballer' etc. Suarez used a cheap dirty insult to try and provoke a reaction from Evra, whether he is a raging KKK loving racist * or he was just on the wind up, it doesn't matter, he made a remark about Evra's race, he should be punished.

I stand by my saying he should be punished, but I must admit, I hadn't thought about it like that.

Anyone see all the Liverpool players warming up in t-shirts with a picture of Suarez on the front, and Suarez 7 on the back.
    Cringey as *.

Neither had I really, but that Tim Vickery article and some of the debate on here got me thinking - about just how much of a culture-dependent thing racism is.

It suddenly struck me (on my way to the chippie:56:) that if somewhere they did manage to create a society where there was just no racism at all - and a person from that society were to travel to our own countries with all their race issues - he would quite probably be perceived as being extremely racist in the way he spoke.

I'm not too sure if Uruguay is actually such an ideal country - but it's an interesting thought all the same...

From everything I have heard about Uraguay they are very progressive in there views towards racism.

Surely hes been playing in europe long enough now to know what words would be deemed offensive or not over here.
Him and evra were arguing with eachother throughout the game and then suarez saw fit to bring up evras skin colour into it, now whether he said it with means to offend, or he said it in the heat of moment without realising it, or maybe he really is that naive that he thinks it would be accteptable to say it seems to be subjective.

The main thing that annoys me about the whole scenario is how people have the audacity to slate evra for being offended.

As Mexican this racism thing is a bit complicated for me (as I guess it's for an Uruguayan), in the field there will always be a lot of bullsh*t trying to annoy the opponents and make them be carded, around here we call a black guy negro/negrito just as we call a white guy güero/güerito and none would racist per se, you're just mentioning something that stands out from a person, like saying fat or skinny. I can't really understand the racism there.
